Bilbo Character Analysis

Everyone has a chapter in their life they don't read aloud, maybe it's just dark and too deep to get into. We all have a dark side, even the heros and the good guys. In fact there's this hero, Bilbo, who has a dark side of his own. There are many protagonists and antagonists in The Hobbit, but let's face it, the only real problem and solution is the main character, Bilbo himself. Bilbo is not only the main character in The Hobbit, but also is his own protagonist and antagonist. Throughout the book, there are multiple ways all these sides of Bilbo are shown; the attack from the spiders, escaping the goblins, and helping the dwarves. All of these examples, include one important item, the magical ring.

When Bilbo finds the magical ring he takes it and doesn't tell the others about it. Now Bilbo was careful, knowing that the invisibility ring can protect his life, if you knew that, knew that you couldn't die with it on, would you keep it a secret from all your friends? The ring started out being perfectly fine in the story, but it started causing trouble when
Gollum wouldn't help him find his way out, he just wanted to eat Bilbo. When bilbo found the ring he was invisible and could escape from the goblins and Gollum who wanted to kill him. The ring saved Bilbo's life so he could return to the dwarves and help the, get their kingdom back. "Slipping in and out of the shadows of the trees, running quick and quiet, and keeping out of the sun; so soon they went back grumbling and cursing to guard the door. Bilbo had escape," pg. 84. If Bilbo hadn't found the ring and became invisible he would have never been able to escape because Gollum would have eaten him. This examples shows how he was more of a protagonist, finding a way out of a situation for the good, because without Bilbo the dwarves couldn't complete their
