what marvelous/malevolence truly is in the world, and how he has lived his life.
At the beginning of the expedition, He refuses to come saying “ Sorry! I don’t want any adventures, Thank You”(Tolkien 6). His whole life he has been sheltered and raised to be contempt with not exploring. In general, though most hobbits are raised to be contempt and not explore either. One exception throughout hobbit history, however, is his mother’s side of the family. To show this later on, while the dwarves are singing and conversing Bilbo overhears the details of the expedition and then his mother’s side of the family kicks in. He is suddenly tempted to go out on this expedition reason of it “Then something Tookish woke up inside him, and he wished to go and see the great mountains”(Tolkien 43). His mother’s side of him has never been active before this day. By reason of that awakening within him, he is able to fully commit to the expedition.
This Aforementioned expedition also greatly increased Bilbo's knowledge of what is truly marvelous and malevolence in the world. Before he went on the expedition the extent of what was worrisome to him was his unwelcome guest Gandalf “Farewell! O Gandalf! May you ever appear where you are most needed and least expected!”(Tolkien 7). His view of what is truly marvelous and malevolence was a relatively miniscule sample. However,That is because of two things. First, his lack of outside contact. Second, is reason of marvelous and malevolence is based on relativity and ideals. By the end of this expedition, however Bilbo finally meets that one creature that puts all the malevolence in the world into a perspective “ Then Bilbo fled with the cup. But the dragon did wake not yet … His heart was beating and a more fevered shaking was in his legs than when he was going down”.(Tolkien 124). Reason of this expedition, he has finally seen what true malevolence is. Now that he has seen Smaug he understands what malevolence is and he starts to tremble at the sight of it. That experience alone is enough to change his whole mindset on what is marvelous and malevolence in the world forever.
However, going through the entirety of this expedition is what is going to change him the most.
By the end of this expedition, he will have changed almost everything about him and how he lives everyday life. At the beginning of the story, Bilbo was kind, but was also extremely contempt with his way of life. He wanted nothing more than to “ eat meals six times a day” (Tolkien 5). But by the end of the expedition he had learned to make it through with what he has; and to also put himself in danger for the sake of others “killing of the giant spider, all alone by himself in the dark”( Tolkien 135). By defeating the giant spider he showed to himself and others that he is willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of others. Therefore showing that the expedition in its entirety has changed him
In the book, The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien, Bilbo is a hobbit that is trying to live his life in peace and Tranquility. But then a soon to be a close friend named Gandalf comes around. His goal is to convince Bilbo to join him on an expedition. An expedition that will span across the land and ultimately modify him. Everything to his willingness to explore, his knowledge of good and malevolence, and how he lives his life will be forever
changed.
