The Illustrated Man
In the 1950’s science fiction collection of stories The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury, there are two stories that express the main idea of revenge and they are The Other Foot and The Veldt. In The Other Foot, revenge is seen when Willie takes revenge on the white people because of how they treated his parents and the other black people on Earth. In The Veldt the children, Wendy and Peter, take revenge on their parents when they don’t let them take their rocket to New York, this revenge builds up until it takes over the children’s minds and they become unhealthily obsessed over it. There are many differences between these two types of revenge that are important to the reader in many different ways.

In The Other Foot revenge is sought by the black people. When they lived on earth the white people treated them very badly. They were forced to sit in the back of buses and theaters, they were shoe-shiners, slaves and many were even hanged for no real reason. When the black people all moved to Mars their lives were drastically changed as they could now live in peace and happiness. When the news spread of a white man coming to Mars in a rocket the Martians prepared themselves and their towns for the arrival. They gathered their weapons, ropes and set up the back of buses and theaters for white people, ready to get their revenge for how their ancestors had been treated. However when everyone saw the frail, old white man and listened to his story of Earths destruction they realized that there was actually no need for revenge. “Willie jerked his head and his mouth opened, Hattie saw the recognition in his dark eyes” the black people understood that the white people had already suffered enough during Earths extermination and so the situation was over, everybody was equal. This theme of revenge is a big part of The Other Foot and is important to the reader because it teaches how revenge can be resolved in a fair and legitimate manner and also to always treat people how you

In The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury, he conveys similar characteristics between Mink from “Zero Hour” and Wendy and Peter from “The Veldt”. At the beginning of both short stories the children become less and less present in front of the parents, Mink starts playing the game Invasion with the younger kids, and Wendy and Peter spend more and more time in their nursery that is set up as Africa. The idea of something controlling the children is also similar between both books as in “The Veldt” the nursery affected the children’s thoughts and led them to Africa. The same happened with Drill in “Zero Hour”, Mink thought she was just playing a game and following all the rules, but slowly the game change to more real life. A huge similarity between…

Despite the scoffs of neighbors, he builds his own "wind wagon" -- a narrow wooden cart with a large mast in the middle that will sail across the prairie powered by the wind. Sam's persistence pays off one day when the wind is right and he "sets sail" for the silver mines of Colorado. This account weaves U.S. history, science, and geography into a dramatic narrative. Revenge is a popular word used profusely by individuals, and writers of all kind, each airing from different perspectives, and notions; apparently, revenge and its repercussions could be analyzed from the contents of these selected text, fable, and fairy tales –‘'The book of Genesis,'' ‘'Of the good advice,'' ‘'the man and the serpent,'' and ‘' the rattlesnake's vengeance''; However, Revenge could be abstruse to delve into, specifically from the context of Genesis. Alternatively, Revenge could be referred as pay-back, retribution, retaliation, or vengeance, which is a harmful action against a person, or group in response to a grievance, be it real or perceived (Wikipedia). From the angle of Genesis, Vengeance (Revenge) and Avenge had played…

Revenge puts off an aroma of evil to the outside world when a person seeks to pay someone back for the wrong committed against them. There seems to be no laws against declaring revenge against a neighbor in our country, but society should know that revenge lends no reconciliation to either party. Also, who truly decides the guilty party when both have committed a wrong towards each other? Mr. Chiu, a character in Ha Jin’s story “The Saboteur,” makes the transition from vacationer and victim of saboteur, to the very essence and definition of saboteur; Jin’s use of role-reversal in this story conveys the concept of revenge clearly and effectively.…

In the novel, The Marrow of Tradition by Charles W. Chesnutt, it seems like vengeance is viewed differently through the lens of different characters. For example, the vengeance that Josh Green seeks upon Captain McBane, which is murdering him because of a past incident, and the vengeance that the whites of Wellington seek through lynching are not necessarily described as thoughts of vengeance. The novel does not necessarily state that there is a similar idea behind the concept vengeance between both situations. But, if we overlook these situations, one can argue that Chesnutt is trying to prove that there is not a difference between both situations because they both try to solve a problem through violence which results in a cycle of vengeance…

The theme of the story is to forgive no matter what. The theme effects the story because if the people of Mars don’t forgive the people of Earth; then the people of Earth will die. On page 52 and 53 is says, “ Were asking to be taken in, we will do the things you used to do for us, work your fields, clean your houses and even cook your meals.” This quote is reliable because it comes directly from the story. The theme shows that the people of Mars are forgiving. On page 56 it says, “ You won’t have to do that. His fingers were opening and the rope fell to the ground coiling around itself along the ground.” This quote shows that the people of Mars have chose to forgive, and save the people of Earth. The theme has affected the story in many ways.…

Justice isn't really about “getting even” or experiencing joy in retaliation, rather it is about righting a wrong that society would agree is morally culpable. Revenge possesses a selfish quality: arrogance, vindication, ruthlessness. Revenge shall not be confused with justice; however, societal standards have allowed these two to become false inverses. As seen in numerous novels, poems and theatrical productions, characters interpret justice as revenge and revenge as justice— so does society.…

Mr. Dark is a very interesting and important character. He is the antagonist of the novel, and resembles an evil force throughout the story. Mr. Dark can be physically described “Tall as a lamp post, his pale face, lunar pockmarks denting it” ( Bradbury 73). His body is covered in tattoos of the carnival crew, and he is known as the Illustrated Man because of them. “His eyebrows, his hair, his suit were licorice black, and the sun yellow gem which stared from the tie pin thrust in his cravat was the same unblinking shade and bright crystal as his eyes” (73). His physique is generally scary, because of the dark colors which resemble his personality (licorice black suit, hair, crystal eyes, etc). Mr. Dark is the mastermind behind the whole carnival.…

From the beginning of human life, the effort of vengeance against others has caused countless horrible things to happen. Every act of terror has been caused by someone revenge, or an attempt of justifying a wrongdoing done to a group of people or an individual. These things have caused millions of deaths throughout human history. This is presented in the novel Tale of Two Cities written by Charles Dickens. Throughout the entire novel there is a continual indignant tone towards the nobles of France and England. Dickens uses the violent scenes in Tale of Two Cities to demonstrate three things: nothing is attained through revenge, one will lose sight of original goals trying to get revenge, and efforts of revenge bring out barbaric and animalistic qualities in humans.…

In Hamlet by William Shakespeare, the theme of revenge is so prominent that it could be considered its own character. The vengeance in Hamlet is essential to the development of Laertes, son of Polonius, Hamlet, prince of Denmark, and Fortinbras, prince of Norway. Revenge is an unnecessary evil causing humans to act blindly through anger rather than through reason. Referring as far back as Hammurabi’s idea of “An eye for an eye,” revenge is merely a chain of wrongdoings stimulated each time by a reciprocated act of evil. Revenge is set to conquer anyone who comes to seek it.…

Revenge (also vengeance, retribution, or vendetta amongst others) consists primarily of retaliation against a person or group in response to a perceived wrongdoing. Although many aspects of revenge resemble or echo the concept of justice, revenge usually has a more injurious than harmonious goal. The goal of revenge usually consists of forcing the perceived wrongdoer to suffer the same pain that was originally inflicted.…

Revenge is the poisonous sentiment which drives all human beings to commit injustice upon those who have done so upon them. This desire is one that all people feel and are susceptible to. In Emile Bronte's Wuthering Heights, revenge can be seen as the most visible theme, as it is the factor which leads our characters to their bleak future. Through the actions committed by the characters of Wuthering Heights, we see how no one can achieve peace through their vengeful acts and in fact these undertakings further add to the decline of the character.…
