The Implicit Association Test
According to Myers, an implicit attitude is an automatic attitude regarding someone or something often differ from our consciously controlled attitude. I believe that the Implicit Association Test accurately assesses implicit attitudes on race because it measures the strength of associations between European Americans, Afracian Americans, good, and bad through the speed of the person’s response. The test is valid, reliable, and has been proven to show consistency among those who have taken the test. The test also requires the test takers to complete multiple trials before showing the user the results of the test to account for ordering effects. In addition to the user completing multiple trials, the test also accounts for handiness (left hand
may have a slower response than the right hand). Overall, this test is a clever way to predict someone’s implicit attitudes towards race.
