The Importance Of Being Liable
On Monday December 8th and on Tuesday the 9th I was late to two different formations. It was not my intentions to be late but with the stress and depression I have been dealing with I was unable to get a decent amount of sleep. I know that it is no excuse to have been late but it was one of the major factors in which I was late. On Sunday the night prior I received a text saying I had to be in at work at 430 for the weigh in. this alone laid heavy on my mind because I worried of passing. That Sunday night I never was able to go to sleep it was me and restless sheets. I had stayed up through the night only to go to work at 430 without any rest. After which I returned home to get ready for 0900 formation at this point I had sat on my couch after …show more content…
The importance of being accountable, is not only for the military but also in the civilian side of the world. This is a very significant because like before it allows your superiors know that you are responsible and are able to be trusted in several tasks. It also shows that you take life seriously and it is vital to let your leadership know that you are healthy and not hurt. I say these things because it is the truth from waking up to traveling to work anything can happen. Things ranging from accidents to being stuck at the gate during a base lockdown. Anything can happen and letting your leadership know what is going on if you are late or traveling somewhere will help them keep track of you. It may even lead to being rewarded knowing they trust you and can count on you they may let you take the day off or even get off early. Depending on who it is they may ask you for a favor because you are driving there way they may ask to be picked up in the event they are unable to be on time. It’s a good way to build trust and comradery in the workplace, especially in the military. On the past Monday I was unable to relay the information that I had fallen asleep on my couch, due to the fact I was unaware I have. I did however let my leadership know that I have yet to fall asleep I let them know after being called that I will be at work in less than five minutes which I did.     Article Eighty-six of the Uniform Code of Military Justice makes it a crime to fail to go to one's appointed place of duty at the time prescribed, to leave one's place of duty, or to be absent from one's unit without authority. Article Eighty-six or Absent Without Leave, states verbatim “Any member of the armed forces who without authority fails to go to his appointed place of duty at the time prescribed; goes from that place; or absents himself or remains absent from his unit, organization, or place of duty at which he is required to be at the time prescribed; shall be punished by court-martial may direct.” Being a certain member appointed for a specific duty at a specific time and place and not showing up or showing up late, whilst knowing of the appointed duty. And without proper authority skipping or showing up late. It is always important to be where you are supposed to be when you are supposed to be there. Even more so in the Marine Corps. Punishment for violating Article Eighty-six of the UCMJ is left to the discretion of the member's direct chain of command. Whether that be an NCO, Staff NCO, or Officer. The first violation is typically a verbal or written counseling, second a written counseling along with a specific form of deterrence such as: reporting in to the duty NCO every four hours through out the day, even in the members off time. Third violation will usually result in a much harsher punishment such as a Page Eleven, Sixty-one Zero-five, or Nonjudicial Punishment, Court-Martial, and Administrative separation from the service. If taken to Nonjudicial Punishment member could end up losing rank, pay, and be confined to restriction. It is all about accountability. Though normally accountability is an individual responsibility it may become a unit responsibility or the responsibility of a superior to ensure you are where you are supposed to be at the appointed time.     In life positivity is the key to any solid affiliation. The bond between two individuals rather if it’s positive or negative always mirrors the outcome of their relationship status. Although lack of enthusiasm is part of life, being inconsiderate and arrogant towards others is unacceptable. In the stories “The Last Game” written by Jan Wiener and “Reunion” by John Cheever is basically talking about the bonds between fathers and sons and their relation. The first reason of contrast is that in “The Last Game”, Jan Wiener returns to Czechoslovakia after his father‘s death to reminisce the lost memories of him after Hitler’s Europe. His action illustrates a respectful attitude that he has towards his father because they had a caring and humble relationship for each other is contrasted with “Reunion” where Charlie and his father lacked communication because the father’s behavior was obnoxious and insulting to Charlie and the waiters attending his needs. My secondary reason of contrast is that Charlie’s father in “Reunion” showed an unlikely personality that made Charlie view him as arrogant, boorish, self-center and bad-mannered individual that he was.     Accountability is important and should not be taken lightly. So many reasons accountability is important. Knowing where your soldiers are at all times helps to know what they’re doing, and what their interest are doing so. In case something happens and someone needs to know where a soldier is accountability comes into play. A good leader should always have accountability for their soldiers but it starts on the lowest level. Anything to be ready and knowing the job that needs to be done. So they can be more functional as a unit, team, and be mission ready. Accountability is an Army and nationwide thing from the highest officer, to the lowest enlisted soldier. If something bad happens and you’re not able to get into contact with one of your soldiers their life, and also your life can be at stake. Deploying overseas is an even bigger thing. You should always be accounted for while you’re overseas, and have a battle buddy.     Accountability is an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for ones actions. Those that are unable to be accountable are the ones that jeopardize the combat readiness of any unit. It is the understanding that everyone is going to do and is willing to do the right thing even when no one else is looking. Everyone is assigned tasks and details not only including your own job that you are expected to do and do right but hold others accountable as well as a system of “check yourself, than check your buddy.” Doing the job correctly and ensuring others do it as well and do it safely are all part of accountability in the military as it can be dangerous given the types of equipment and tools we use. As an example any tools and or equipment left unsupervised can be lost and or stolen. As such in that event if the tools and or equipment was left out instead of signed out the wrong person becomes accountable. Everyone is accountable for their actions. You should always act responsibly as well, not just yourself but everyone. We spend thousands of dollars for each person to be trained and when ready, the expectation at your permanent party duty station is that you are going to be accountable for your actions and you as an individual operate and, that everyone around you is going to do the same. Being accountable means being dependable, showing up to work and to appointments on time, meeting deadlines, being at the right place and at the right time and doing the right thing at the right time.
