The Importance Of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Writing Style In The Home
Paul has never secured such a refined place for me. Well, he has never put me in a “home” before. A massive dwelling with contemporary bathrooms and fluorescent lighting, it’s a place vastly superior to typical descriptions of antiquated and dusty assisted living centers. This place is well-furnished and far grander than I expected.
The place is impressive with its chiseled walnut doors and elaborate stone siding. But it’s a little too frivolous for my taste. How can such a sophisticated place be for sick old people? The extravagance is somehow disturbing.
But, perhaps the environment will help me as Paul wishes. Since Harry died, Paul worries excessively about my emotional state, something I never gave much thought. Since the story focuses on the main character’s struggles in the assisted living center, I titled the story “The Home”. Maintaining Gilman's diary format, I used asterisks to divide entries and wrote in the first person with minimal dialogue. Along with short declarative phrases, I used drawn out sentences to mimic long winded diary prose. The dashes and exclamations help reflect changes in the narrator's attitude. This short story reflects the Realist movement by depicting a typical lady’s struggle with isolation in a nursing home. The story illustrates the loneliness many parents experience after their matured children distance themselves. Like “The Yellow Wallpaper”, I added psychological horror by making the narrator mentally unstable and oblivious to her insanity I also kept the reason for the narrator’s stay in the institution ambiguous for further mystery. Thus, through similar syntax and parallels in theme, I mirrored the style and psychological horror of “The Yellow

She immediately voices her concerns about the eerie feeling she gets in the house and how much she hates the yellow wallpaper, but like always, her husband disregards her concerns and insists that he knows best because he is a doctor. She also believes that she was born to be a writer, but her husband forbids her from writing or communicating with other people and insists that she stay in bed to rest. Much like a prisoner in solitary confinement, the narrator starts to lose her mind. She begins to fixate her entire life on the wallpaper while she spends her days in bed. She started keeping a journal which he hid from her family, and in it, she writes about how she ‘discovered’ a creeping woman trapped behind the pattern. She centers her life on freeing this woman by locking the door and attempting to tear off all of the wallpaper. When her husband comes home from work, he breaks down the door, sees the mess, and faints. Then the woman crawls out of the room and the story seems to be over, but there has got to be more. This woman is not simply your Martha Stewart of the 1800s that doesn’t like her bedroom wallpaper.     The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman unveil the expectations of certain characteristics that women should possess by men such as, obedience, submissiveness, beauty, passivity, and purity. The husband, John, portrayed in this short-story treats the narrator, or his wife, as if she is oblivious and as if she is merely a child evident in his diction. He refers to her as a “little girl” and therefore does not take her opinions into serious consideration and simply overlooks her requests.
