The Importance Of Concussions
There are more than 3 million cases of concussions per year. Concussion can happen to anyone in any sport. A concussion is a jolt in your head causing the brain to move in your skull. Concussions are most common in the youth population. Although many people think that sports should have fewer rules towards injuries received to the head and neck, it is better to have more rules because it could lead to a better concussion protocol, could lead to a better understanding of concussions and there symptoms, and change the culture of head injuries. Concussion protocol needs to be changed as players who receive a blow or injuries to the head tend to be allowed back in the game sooner than they should. The way Taylor's concussion was handled was very improper and it caused him to have to cut his career short as Taylor at the time was one of the leading scorers in the league. Taylor's story is just one of countless occasions where players have had concussion symptoms and the athlete was put back into the game due to lack of protocol. Athletes should have faith and trust in there coaches and medical staff that they know when they are not able to return. Symptoms of concussions tend to range between a week and up to two or more months depending on the severity of the concussion, but these symptoms could be reduced if more and more doctors came together about the risk of concussions and there symptoms. "Symptom resolution following the first concussion is three-eight days, following the second impact nine and 21 days, after the

It wasn’t until 1994 that the Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) committee was created. They viewed the situation as a mild problem. At that time players were allowed to return to play after suffering a concussion. Nobody knew of the long term effects that concussions could have on the brain. It wasn’t until 2009 that a new return-to-play protocol was set in place. This protocol stated that a player could not return to play after being removed from a game or practice unless there were no symptoms of a concussion both moving and at rest. The player had to be cleared by his team physician and another independent physician. Now there are many steps one must take in order to be allowed to participate. The first step is rest and recovery. This allows for a player to recover from concussion symptoms. The next step is light aerobic exercises. This step is to see if there are any signs of a concussion that might return. The third step introduces more complex movements. This step is also used to spot symptoms of a concussion. The fourth step is more focused on football related activities. Including this step adds the load of playing to see if the brain can handle it. Lastly, the player is allowed to return to play if no symptoms have been…

As previously said before, athletes must be required to sit out for longer periods of time to allow time for the brain to heal completely. As unfair as this may appear, it is only benefiting the teen's health not only now, but in the years to come. The prefrontal cortex has not developed and in general, last time I checked, a brain injury was not benefiting anyone at all. If a key player has a concussion, make the team wait until the star player is well again. I'm positive the team would rather wait until that star player was well, then not wait at all and carry a coffin to a grave due to a fatal…

Officials and trainers of lacrosse urge that any player suspected of having a concussion be removed from the game and not permitted to play again until they have been cleared by an appropriately trained professional (Lincoln). This is something that many people feel is common sense, but the reality is that this does not always happen. Based on U.S. Lacrosse rules, a player should not return within 1-3 weeks after obtaining a concussion (Lincoln). The rules state that a player should sit out longer and longer periods of time after receiving a concussion as the brain has already been previously damaged. Not only should coaches be reminded of these rules, but players as well. A player needs to be cleared by a medical professional first before entering the game. Many athletes try to push away their injuries in order to return back to the game, though this leads to further damage that can result in permanent absence from playing and even death. Concussions are a large concern, which is why there are many discussions upon the topic. Athletes need to learn to take care of their bodies before, during and after injury in order to help with future development. Another way U.S. Lacrosse wants to cut down on injuries is to have stiffer penalties for aggressive and dangerous plays (Lincoln). This means that after a check to the head there are automatic yellow cards, and even reds in some situations. The athletic world can not truly rely on a piece of equipment to solve the problem. This is an issue that needs to be further dealt with by players, parents, coaches, officials and…
