Brain Injury Research Paper
In anything you do, there comes a risk. For example, if you drive a car, you could get into a crash or if you are cooking, chances are you have a risk of stabbing or burning yourself by accident. In this case, whenever you participate in a sport, you have the risk of getting a concussion. What is a concussion? A concussion is a brain injury caused by a blow to the head or a violent shaking of the head and body. "The Centers for Disease control estimates more than 300,000 sports-related concussions occur each year in the United States." (Article One) In teens, controversy has come to the point where adults ask: By law, a medical professional must sign off before an injured player can go back on the field. If head injuries (more specifically, …show more content…
If teens do not give themselves enough time to heal completely, this can effect the chances of worsening the situation at hand if it is not handled properly. One concussion can lead to serious short/long term effects later on which can also give a more likely chance for another concussion to happen again. "If an athlete sustains a second concussion during this period, the risk of permanent brain injury increases significantly and the consequences of a seemingly mild second concussion can be very severe, and even result in death." (Article 3) Just think, if you are still injured with the possibility of facing serious consequences to your health, you cannot put forth your best effort because you are still injured even if you are not aware of …show more content…
However here is the weakness, the child MUST stop all sports and rest until he has no symptoms. It is important to protect the brain right after a head injury. Wait for your doctor to say that it is ok for your child to return to sports and do not allow him to go to practice just to watch. When he/she does return to sports, if any symptoms return, he must stop and rest until the doctor tells him that he can do things again. Keep in mind a slow return to sports may take several days to several months. Last but not least, the child must return to normal school work and studies before returning to game play. You must also have a doctor’s ok for your child to resume sports and PE activities. As previously said before, athletes must be required to sit out for longer periods of time to allow time for the brain to heal completely. As unfair as this may appear, it is only benefiting the teen's health not only now, but in the years to come. The prefrontal cortex has not developed and in general, last time I checked, a brain injury was not benefiting anyone at all. If a key player has a concussion, make the team wait until the star player is well again. I'm positive the team would rather wait until that star player was well, then not wait at all and carry a coffin to a grave due to a fatal

When it comes to sports, every player in a team plays a major part. They work together so that they may achieve victory and success. If one player goes down, they all suffer. One of the most common sports-related injuries is a concussion. A concussion is a brain injury characterized by an onset of impairment of cognitive and/or physical functioning, and is caused by a blow to the head, face, or neck, or a blow to the body that causes a sudden jarring of the head (i.e., a helmet to the head, being knocked to the ground). After concussed, a player can be vulnerable to brain damage and can experience physical, emotional, and cognitive symptoms. Nevertheless, the majority of players who have received a concussion can fully recover if given enough time to heal. Though this is known as a fact, many people fail to make this a major priority after a player has been concussed. Players who have experienced a concussion should be required to sit out for longer periods of time so it can be assured that said player has completely healed.…

There have been several studies conducted on the dangers of concussion in youth football. They all seem to mention the same issue. The effects that these concussions have on the thinking, behavior and attitudes of the youth. Many of them begin to act out with negative or aggressive behavior, they underperform in school, and many often acquire anger issues. These results are alarming. I believe that for this to change there must be awareness of these negative effects and focus on the children and protecting them. Concussions are not the only dangers in youth football, there are also reports of children paralyzed and other severe injuries that can stick with them for many years and often sometimes the rest of their…

is a head-trauma-induced disease linked to depression, impulse-control problems, memory loss, and dementia. More than 20 dead NFL players were found to have C.T.E. There’s an increase in the dangers of playing football like concussions. More dangers for younger players whose brains are still developing. Teens don't always want to tell the coach they have a concussion to risk having to stay on the sidelines. Which is why players get even hurt more for not taking care of the problem before it got worst. High school players usually don’t have expert medical help or none at all. Which is why they get hurt more the college or pro because they have experts taking care of them. Improving helmet technology is a good place to start making football safer. Coaches also need to make sure players with head injuries stay off the field long enough to fully heal. They should also reduce the overall hits to the head in practice and on the field. NFL has started fining or threatening to suspend players who violate existing rules on unnecessary or intentional hits. It’s also considering changing the frequency and structure of practice to lessen the amount of head trauma. In the second article it states, “Concussions are more dangerous for teenagers because, studies show, their brain tissue is less developed than adults’ and more easily 30 damaged. High school players also typically receive less expert medical care than college or pro players, or none at all. There’s also the question of helmets. Many young players use old safety gear that’s been passed down long past its prime. And even new helmets are designed to prevent only skull fractures, not…

Students should be held out of sports longer after they receive a concussion. A concussion can lead to severe brain damage, however, an athlete can recover completely if they do not return to play the sport immediately. Allowing a student athlete to return to sports promptly could cause them perpetual brain damage and puts them at risk for further concussions while they are still recovering. Concussions are "invisible" injuries and high school athletes should be closely monitored until they recover completely and then, and only then, the athlete should be allowed to return to their sport.…

Sports are more popular for teens nowadays but they are the top reason teens are getting injured these days. Rules used to be very minimal when sports were first created, but as of today each sport has its own specific set of rules to follow by. At every sporting event it is mandatory to have some type of medical team or medical kit with you at all times. Concussions are the biggest concern when it comes to injuries. Especially playing football, or boxing or other head to head sports. In each sport they make rules to try and prevent the cause of concussions. The rules in each sport nowadays are so advanced that they try so hard to push the importance of how bad a concussion can be toward an athlete. A concussion could ruin a player’s season, or even career. This doesn’t just happen to teen athletes. This could occur to those playing in the NHL (National Hockey League), the NFL (National Football League) and even boxing along with many other sports.…

According to the video made by WCPO, the concussion rate has tripled in the past decade. Adding to that for students between 14-19 the emergency room visits have gone up from 7,000 a year to 22,000 every year (WCPO). This has extreme importance because concussions can cause memory loss, brain damage and depression. This proves that too many concussions could rob a child of their youth. As you can see high school sports aren’t in the best interest for you…

However “research is showing that many young athletes are not reporting their symptoms, are not removed from play and are returning to play too soon” (CDC Concussion at Play 2). It has been proven that concussions are not necessarily caused by just a hit on the head. However, it is now being discovered that a concussion can be caused by a “bump, blow or jolt to the head or the body that results in the brain moving rapidly back and forth” (CDC Concussion at Play 3). This means that even if an athlete feels no symptoms after getting hit, they could still get a concussion as a result of moving around after the blow, like to continue to play in a game or practice. A study was conducted by the Center for Disease prevention on High school athletes. Sixty nine percent of these boys and girls reported that continued to play with concussion symptoms and forty percent of those reported that their coaches didn’t even know they had a concussion (CDC Concussion at Play 5). Coaches are not properly trained on concussions and most of them encourage their players to play the whole season, putting injuries off to be dealt with during the off season. With the prolonged risks of concussions growing, Coaches should be required and should want to let their athletes heal before returning to…
