The Importance Of Education In My Life

I come from a long line of entrepreneurs, scientists, and professors. My family believes that education should be the top priority in one's life. I studied at one of the top ranked private schools and completed my undergraduate degree from one of the eminent universities in India.
At the age of 22, I moved to California to help my fiance with his franchise sandwich store so he could cope with his fathers' illness.
In India young students seldom work to make an allowance and it is not seen as a rite of passage. Parents do not expect their teenagers to become financially independent until their education is complete and consider it their responsibility to support their childrens education. (Secure?)
The turnaround in my life was 360 degrees.
I made countless mistakes at first and my apprehensions made me turn to the people that were employed by us for guidance. In the midst of this, I also managed to provide hilarious entertainment to my co workers. The time I called out 'George' when the customers' name was 'Jorge' or when I would refer to the restroom as 'loo' drawing quizzical looks from people around me. Of course, my telephonic conversations seemed as if the recipient and I were talking in two different foreign languages, unable to fully understand each other's
But every new day somehow pushed me to meet the new challenges head on. While I may not have had a basic understanding of the system of this country, I made it a point to give myself a crash course in labour laws as well as the health and safety codes we were meant to abide by. This called for a rudimentary comprehension of the workings of the freezer, the concept of mandatory breaks of the employees and the accurate temperatures of the fridge. I did not want to make excuses for my lack of understanding which could this is ok jeopardize the future of a the store (future of the outlet uncertain)that generated a revenue of almost a million annually. In retrospect I had to unlearn a lot of what I knew and learn again. Summers were always a busy period, however revenues would fall below expectations during the winters, making it difficult to pay bills and salaries at times. I would constantly manage and rotate schedules to make the running of the store more efficient and would sometimes be the only person working.
