The Importance Of Field Placement
Hello Martina! I wanted to comment on your thread, because I can relate due to my own field placement. While I do not work with children in school, I do work with children who may need referrals to outside agencies in order to obtain help. Therefore, when it comes to CIS, and doing group counseling sessions I feel it is a great option for children who meet the eligibility requirements. However, I can understand why children who may not be able to participate in the program may feel negatively about the program. Garthwait (2013) mentions asking your field instructor, “About external forces that shape or limit your agency, such as funding priorities and sources, community attitudes, client feedback, regulatory bodies, political pressure, and

Some children and young people need input from a range of services, and the SENCO may well be the person who takes on the responsibility for pulling together the support from different agencies and keeping open the lines of communication. Since the implementation of Every Child Matters, and the introduction of extended services through schools and nurseries, there is a wider range of people working with pupils with SEN than ever before. The ‘Team Around the Child’ (TAC)…

Specifically, when addressing intellectual disabilities, a plethora of training options are available, language training, socialization training, self-care skills training and academic skills training would all be potential tools to deal with singular and comorbid disorders. A team comprised of my child, myself/spouse, physicians, mental health practitioners and educators. I would understand that a good working consensus would be paramount to the success and potential of my child's outcome. From the SEN Code of Practice 2001 the role of the educational needs coordinator in school has attracted a good deal of attention since the Code of Practice on the identification and assessment of SEN was introduced in 1994. Not only did the code make it a requirement for all schools to have a named coordinator for SEN in place, it prescribed a considerable range of duties and responsibilities, described as ‘onerous’ and ‘breathtaking broad’ (Gains 1994).…

Over the past three semesters all I have been hearing about is IDEA, 504, CHILD FIND, NCLB, and all of the other programs that are in place to make sure that children are not left on their own if they are in need of extra help inside or outside of the classroom. Each time any of these programs were mentioned I would always wonder about the process that a school would follow to qualify a student under these special services. I have never been exposed to the process, just told when a child was "special Ed" or "mainstreamed" in my internship classroom. I know that there has to be several steps involved in this process, otherwise there would be some major issues with parents and other professionals, when you tell them "I think your child needs special services." I also know that there has to be more than one persons opinion involved and, as in every aspect of school, parents must be completely involved and in control.…

It is important to work in partnership with others because all agencies can share information and concerns to create a holistic view about children and young people in their care when any need arises, to help to keep the children safe from harm and promote their welfare, to diagnose a special need quickly in children and get the help that is needed to the child/family as soon as possible without confusing the child or their families. And as a pre-school setting it is good to know that you are not on your own if any concerns should arise about a child in the setting and that specialist help is available to all the children and young people if required.…

Multi- agency working is the involvement of more than one agency, and a team may consist of practitioners from several professional backgrounds who have different areas of expertise. Some of the practitioners may include health, education and social services. Some of these practitioners and professionals are involved in a child’s life are usually at least the child’s parents and the class teacher. This could then expand out to involve a speech therapist, a doctor, a social worker, a nurse and/or a psychologist. All of these people have an interest in helping to support the child and therefore all need to collaborate together for the benefit of the individual children.…

Teachers work in their own classroom but will have to talk to their co-workers about different assignments or a child’s development. Not only is professional collaboration important between co-workers, but it is also important between teachers and parents. During the process of developing an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) for a child, the parents should be informed every step of the way. Collaboration is a huge part of this process. Parents need to give their consent in order for the child to be tested. After parental consent, the professional team may start evaluating. A student will be evaluated through many different tests by many different specialists. The specialists on an IEP team include an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, a speech therapist, a school psychologist, a school district representative and a special education and general education teacher. Collecting all the data, each person on the team will have to collaborate with one another and share what data they collected and how to go about helping the student succeed. Collaboration is a style that professionals chose to use in order to accomplish a common goal. Professional collaboration is a huge component in education and even bigger component in constructing an…
