This commonly takes the form of an afternoon snack and activities such as story time. By spending time and caring for the natives, Sacred Road has provided a better future for the natives. Vasquez even went on to say, “What is there to hope for? When Sacred Road Ministries began, many children were nervous, timid, and would not speak to the staff. Over the years, there has been a dramatic change. Children we never saw smile, are smiling and laughing... Through Sacred Road Ministries, a church community has formed, along with Youth and Children programs, after-school tutoring programs, and work parties that come in the spring and summer to do service projects in the community. What we see growing is a sense of family and a growing trust. We believe this has sparked a change to combat hopelessness. For many of the children, especially, the Sacred Road staff and community is the only safe place they know where they can let down their guard. Sacred Road’s facility is like a home for them. They are fed, loved, played with, and just have basic needs met.”…
Soonerthon is a year-long fundraising event ending with a twelve-hour dance marathon in the spring. All the proceeds raised benefits The Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City through funding medical research and family support programs. The programming committee is in charge of planning every minute of the twelve-hour event dance marathon. Within the committee, my personal responsibility was to design and organize a children’s carnival at the main event for the “miracle kids” from the hospital. The joy that radiated from the children that passed through the carnival was contagious, not only to myself but also to the other 2,000 OU students that attended the Soonerthon event as well.…
Texas: For over a 100 years Texas was a one-party state of Democrats (Munisteri). Republicans did not have a chance until Abraham Lincoln who was against slavery and defended the Union during the Civil War. During this time before Republicans took over Texas was free-willed and won majority of seats in the race and had all seats in Legislature. One of the best ways to describe this era was best stated by Author Steven, “developed a free spirit, a pride in self-reliance and a work ethic that is still unmatched today “Early Texans lived, loved and died entirely by their own efforts without relying on government to fulfill their needs. Just like modern Texans, early settlers believed in families, churches and neighbors, not in bureaucracy” (Munisteri).…
Wonderstruck is visually appealing as well as emotionally inviting. Middle school students, especially those who read graphic novels, will fall in love with this book. Rose’s story, told only through black-and-white illustrations, keeps the reader actively involved since the gaps must be filled in while the story unfolds. On the other hand, Ben’s story is told through words and keeps the reader wondering how the two stories intertwine. With themes such as longing to find acceptance, living with a disability, and dealing with the “loss” of a parent, today’s middle school student can easily relate to the same struggles as our two characters.…
I am an active member of a service organization called Key Club. One day during Key Club week is Random Acts of Kindness Day. My goal was to start implementing this in my everyday life. On a daily basis, we can be selfish to the needs of others without even realizing it. Everything was put in perspective for me when one afternoon I stopped by the Dollar Tree to pick up some supplies. It was the cashiers birthday and she was turning 74. We wished her a happy birthday and she explained how her family had not planned anything for her birthday. After we left we decided that we should go ask her if she would like to go out to eat and we’d sing her happy birthday. She said she couldn’t because her husband would be waiting for her. So we sang for…
As I drive up to the Stone Center, I notice there were people and children already here. When I walk inside the Stone Center, there were Halloween decorates all over the place. The tables were cover with a black cloth, orange Halloween bucket filled with crayon for the children, and Halloween coloring books on the tables. Don't get me start on the food. The smell of the delicious food reminds me of my mother homecooked meal and the cupcakes look beautiful with orange frosting and colorful, Halloween sprinkler on top of it. As people started coming in, I got to worry that we didn't have enough chairs as so many people there was.…
The presentation should be engaging for the audience (you can direct it to a specific audience or your general community), and should summarize all of the important research and findings. The presentation should include:…
As we firmed up our process, we communicated about the ministry to other neighborhood schools and are now packing 60 bags a week, for 5 different schools. We deliver over 2,000 Power Packs a year to hungry children. The youngsters visit the school nurse, in private, on Friday afternoons before going home for the weekend. They carry their packs home in their backpacks. The process is as easy as possible on the children, without logistical issues or humiliation. We have continued this ministry for three years now and plan to sustain the activity until the need is…
The Food Bank was the perfect place to offer our services and it was an honor to participate with my fellow peers on this particular volunteer experience. The staff and volunteers welcomed us with warm, open arms. Due to prior registration through one of our students, those arms were overly outstretched. As a class, we had an opportunity to participate in the packaging of the foods that were being donated to those families in need in the Houston area. It was our job to sort these foods in their designated containers. These containers needed to be separated for items such as canned foods, sweets, bottled drinks, and household items just to name a few. Before the rules of engagement were discussed, the people facilitating the whole movement provided us with general rules we needed to adhere to promote the overall experience. In this beginning, proper instruction was given to all concerning the Do’s and Don’ts of doing such a task. This task required us to be active, and to remain on our feet while adhering to a few rules. Ultimately, they wanted to make sure the process would be a smooth one. There were tons of boxes in the back, where we had to go and retrieve them, separating the contents in the bins. After the bins were filled up to the top, we now transferred them to on movable shelves that stacked bins into the back. This process ran smoothly and we had no problems assisting others. As time progressed, we had opportunities to get to know some of the participants when we stopped for lunch. Many of the volunteers who partook in this experience showed the same amount of willingness to help the community as the University of Houston-Victoria students. We all worked as a team and had a great time doing it.…
In my Senior Year of being in the National Honor Society, I was excited to volunteer and to help those in need. I helped out with a soup kitchen in Brainerd through another organization that I am in, the Student Council. As I scooped soup into bowls and placed them onto people’s trays, I could see a look of appreciation and gratitude on their faces. This was the first time in my National Honor Society career where I understood just how much my time and effort meant to these individuals. This volunteer opportunity made me realize that a simple meal, smile, and effort to do something helpful and nice can really make someone’s day brighter or easier.…
It was my favorite activity because it was a celebration for the homeless. It gave them hope and essentials before they had to endure the cold winter. A group of us were able to pass out clothing, bedding, and toys to those who waited. I also helped serve holiday meals to people, which included turkey, macaroni, and pumpkin pie. It was rewarding to see everyone eating nice meals while a band played holiday music in the background. For a moment, everyone could forget their situations and enjoy the presence of others. At times, it was overwhelming because we were helping hundreds of people, but in the end I enjoyed it all. I learned the most from this event because I saw parents that were trying to provide for their infants and people who had homes but could not pay for their basic utilities, all desperately waiting in line to receive clothing and bedding. This gave me a new definition of what homeless means.…
I noticed my peers in the class having similar feelings, with lots of smiles and anticipation as Mrs.Walker walked around to each person delivering gifts. Now, of course like everything there were some struggles during the activity as well. One major temptation was to tell someone who the person I was giving gifts to was, I remember after school on the day we got assigned our people I wanted to at least tell one person, but like Magwitch had to do and Pip for that matter, we had to keep our identities completely a secret so I resisted the urge and in the end it ended up paying off. Personally, I believe the best part about the activity was the gift giving. I loved seeing everyone's faces when they got their gifts and then the thank you's that would be shouted around the room. Like everyone, I also liked receiving my gifts and seeing what my benefactor had done for that week, it was always a nice ending to a week and provided a little extra happiness to my day. In total, the experience was a great one, and when the four weeks ended I was super excited to find out who my benefactor was and to give them a more formal thank…
It is unfair for us to get whatever we want for Christmas, but homeless people don’t get anything at all. The homeless need to feel loved during this holiday season. Many people in society do not pay attention to the problems of homelessness; they do not care about the poor and forgotten. The Spiritans are known for helping the poor and forgotten members of the world. As students in a Spirian school, we both want to help the poor and forgotten of the world. The charisms we both have to offer are compassion. We are compassionate people that truly care for others. We also are good listeners, and can listen to the poor people and their stories and offer them love. We are doing this project not just because we have to do it, but we want to do it. We feel compelled to do this, for the good of others. We want to make a change in our community even its small. The Spiritans do the work that many do not want to do. That is exactly what Conor and I are going to do in our…
Trick-or-treating, is an activity for children on or around Halloween in which they proceed from house to house in costumes, asking for treats with the question, "Trick or treat?" The "trick" part of "trick or treat" is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property if no treat is given. Trick-or-treating is one of the main traditions of Halloween. It has become socially expected that if one lives in a neighborhood with children one should…
