For years, not having a college degree was the biggest regret I ever had, and now that I will no longer have that, I look forward to what I will do with that. Like with Erikson’s Ego vs Despair, like Kelly, I want to be at that point in my life where I am satisfied with my life. I never felt bad, but there were moments in my work career where I would not be able to advance because I did not have a college degree. Joan Erikson and Gerotransendence, Kelly have hit that point where he is content with where his life is at and the close circle of friends that he has is what helps keep him grounded.…

Today, many students like myself all over the America have walked down the hectic aisles of high school and have sat in some of the largest lecture halls in college. As kids, we were somewhat taught that going to school and getting an education would be the key to our success and thought that if we didn’t fulfill these expectations, we would end up homeless and live a terrible life. For so many years during my educational career this was the mentality that I believed in. Although this may be over exaggerated, I believe that this may hold some truth to the many college students all over the world. It is almost like we volunteer to go into debt and deal with all the stress that a college education brings us because we feel like it will get us…

Going to college has always been a goal to myself. Personally, it means more than expecting to get a good job with a high earning potential. It means the opportunity to develop myself as a person and become a valued member of society. It means, that as the oldest brother and first generation in my family with the possibility to attend college, setting an example for my younger siblings about how to shape your own path and break that mindset of “do what you have to do” and replacing it with one which says, “do something that makes you happy.”…

The Library of Congress (2015) uses the common definition of “The American Dream” written by James Adams, who states “…our lives should be richer and fuller, with opportunities for prosperity and advancement for each according to ability or achievement, instead of social class or circumstance of birth” (p.1). Is this an attainable goal in today’s society? The implied path to achieve this dream is through the matriculation in some form of higher education, while incorporating continuous growth in different forms of education, professional and personal aspect over your lifetime. However, with the rising cost of higher education, this goal may not be the reality for millions of Americans, which is the overarching theme that has motivated both…

The constant reminder of achieving greatness has stuck with me since I was eight years old. Throughout middle school I was top of my class, in high school I graduated cum laude with a 4.4 GPA and currently in my 1st year of college I am top of my intermediate/college algebra class, I scored the highest grade out of all 5 of my psychology teachers classes, and I have an A in my Philosophy class. My educational goals consist of gaining knowledge throughout my entire life, achieving higher than my goals, being as involved as I can possibly be with my college/ community, and continuing to prosper. Ever since…

Fortunately, by the fifth grade my parents were able to rent an apartment nearby our school and had found jobs in multiple Brownsville restaurants. After the move, things became much easier and we were able to have a much simpler life, though we were never able to forget the hardships we experienced and the effort we put into enhancing our lives. Today, I am sure my successes as of now are gratifying my parents as I am in the top 10% of my class, the Co-Captain of the Golden Stars Dance Team, member of the National Honor Society, Piano Club, HOSA, and in TRIO UTRGV talent search program. I attend rigorous AP classes to improve my opportunity to attend a university and have the finest future I can give myself. Although my triumphs may not look like much to most, I can assertively say that the trial of going through difficulty to have a superior future has been overcome with the comfort of focus, strength, and the right set of mind to build a better tomorrow for my family and…
