It is unfortunate how racism is still a huge issue to be dealt with and how brutal its consequences are, as seen in the events that occurred at University of Missouri.
Racism is a concern that is encompassed in multi cultural issues and if we would want to fully eliminate it from our society, the first step should be to promote multi cultural education in schools especially from lower grades which should be continued as the students progress further up . Through promoting this education, the students will be able to understand and appreciate the uniqueness and diversity of their various cultures.
One student involved in the above incident claimed that she was provoked by comments and actions by fellow students who were probably
acting out of ignorance. Therefore, educating people and students especially, is crucial.
Secondly, equality should be promoted in learning institutions by for instance promoting equal and unbiased opportunities for students belonging to all races.
Positive criticism in classrooms should be encouraged and based solely on an individual’s performance.
The teachers play a huge role in students’ lives and therefore should participate in appreciation of the various cultural groups. When the teachers make an effort to do this, the students in turn feel appreciated and therefore tend to work harder at school and work toward becoming better people in the society and school community in general.
If we turn a deaf ear to all that is going on concerning multicultural concerns we will miss out on an accurate view of our society and communities.
