The nurse can serve his/her community by attending volunteer opportunities such as the one I attended,
volunteering at free medical clinics, blood drives, free screening such as blood pressure screenings. I learned from this opportunity that volunteering does not have to be hard, but it can actually be a stress reliever. Nurses should not be obligated to volunteer in the community to improve health, especially with their already busy schedules. Volunteering should be done out of kindness not an obligation. By a nurse volunteering he/she is ethically applying beneficence. Some legal issues the nurse may face, especially volunteering at a clinic are; patients asking the nurse for prescriptions, or to be diagnosed.
Volunteering was a great, relaxing experience. I am glad I got to be a part of doing something great for babies. One day in the future when I decide to have children, I hope to receive either a red hat or a personal made hat by a nursing student!
