Allograft Tissue Training Case Study

Millicent Villamayor – Fadul is an Operating Room nurse with over 20 years of experience as a circulating and charge nurse in various hospitals in the north east. She is currently employed at Medstar Franklin Square Medical Center as an O.R. Nurse Level IV. She is a member of Quality and Safety Committee in the O.R. Department and of widely recognized Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN). In 2012, she initiated the Allograft tissue tracking system after the department was cited by Joint Commission for non-compliance of proper documentation of allograft tissue tracking. She developed a tissue tracking system using excel spreadsheet to ensure documentation compliance. She audits the tracking system monthly, rectify any error, re-educate staff who makes a wrong entry and report the progress to the nurse manager. Moreover, she with the help of the clinical educator came up with an E-Learning course on how to properly handle and process allograft tissues. The E-Learning module was loaded in their Learning System Management and being used as an annual mandatory course for the staff. For three consecutive years after initiating tissue tracking system, the department has not been cited by the Joint Commission.
She has worked on different shifts when a need arises.
She is very flexible and a team player. She has experience using the DaVinci (robotic cases) and floated in different areas in the department like in ambulatory and Endoscopy. She enjoys to mentor new nurses and is always given the task to precept newly hired staff.

She sees herself as a nurse educator in years to come so she can mentor new nurses and share her long experience with the new breed of
nurses.
