The Importance of Self Esteem
Self Esteem Your self-esteem: you can't touch it, but it affects how you feel. You can't see it, but it might be there when you look at yourself in the mirror. You can't hear it, but it's there when you talk about yourself or when you think about yourself. Self-esteem refers to how much you respect yourself and like yourself. As with so many concepts in mental health, you can think of self-esteem as a continuum, ranging from high self-esteem to low self-esteem. In this paper, I intend to state the risks of low self-esteem, and how to build high self-esteem. People with low self esteem don’t have much respect for themselves. They judge themselves harshly and worry too much about what others think. They always fear looking bad and don’t try new things. People with low self esteem may be a harm or danger for their community. They may have a negative effect on their peers and change others for the worse. If a person has low self esteem, he/she is very likely to use drugs, drop out of school, become pregnant, and suffer from eating disorders. They are also more likely to engage in violent or self destructive behaviors. Never befriend a person with low self esteem, for you are bound to get hurt by them. Also, always try to build high self esteem. Of course it's OK to have ups and downs in your feelings, but having low self-esteem isn't OK. Feeling like you're not important can make you sad and can keep you from trying new things. It can keep you from making friends or affect how hard you try at school.
Having strong self-esteem is also a very big part of growing up. As you get older and face tough decisions — especially under peer pressure — the more self-esteem you have, the better. It's important to like yourself.
If you think you might have low self-esteem, try talking to an adult you trust about it. He or she may be able to help you come up with some good ideas for building your self-esteem.
