The Importance Of Variation In Healthcare
You have brown hair and I have blonde. You drive a large blue car and I drive a small black car. You enjoy math and I despise it. These are all examples of variation. Variation is a subject that affects our daily lives and decisions we make every single day. Each individual on planet Earth is different and to me that is what the definition of variation is. Because we are all different, grow up different, and all achieve different goals we are all going to make unique choices throughout our lifetimes. In the medical field we all want to keep variations to a minimum. I believe that implementing evidence based clinical practice guidelines can reduce variations in practice. These guidelines are put in place as a universal consistency in health care facilities all over the country. If variations are to occur when implementing clinical practice guidelines things will become chaotic and unsystematic. The guidelines are there to help direct physicians and staff members, so if variations occur one may not know what to do in a time of crisis. …show more content…
Variation can also cost the facility both time and money. Errors that are made my variation can come in all shapes and sizes. Misinformation I believe is one of the biggest variations caused in the medical field. “Misinformation is information that is incorrect because of such factors as misinterpretation, improper recording, underreporting, and data collection mistakes” (Spath, 2011, p. 108). In the article, Back to Basics: Implementing Evidence- based Practice, the author, Lisa Spruce (2015), explains that health care is transitioning from volume based to value-based care. Evidence based practice takes into consideration effectiveness by using research, patient preference and clinic experience, as well as cost-effectiveness (Spruce, 2015). When using this type of practice, a clinician is more likely to follow policy if they are able to understand and explain why they follow certain procedures, instead of just complying to a rule because it is a rule (Spruce, 2015).…

The definition of Evidence Based Practice (EBP) is “professional understanding and action that is based on the thoughtful use of knowledge and information from available, reliable, and dependent sources” (Brown, 2002). The definition also includes the balance of clinical experience, proven evidence from scientific studies with patient input. This input from patients will incorporate their culture, values and other preferences.. Evidence Based Practice is a fluent process that requires nurses to be current and correct on information as it pertains to their daily practice. The intent of EBP is to improve the quality of the care that is delivered to the client. This increased knowledge, whether it is correct or incorrect, is a motivating factor for nursing professionals to have current and correct information available when working with clients in making healthcare decisions. Healthcare professionals, especially nurses, are the touch point of health care and are the key to cost effective quality care. Evidence-based practice (EBP) is an interdisciplinary approach to clinical practice that has been gaining ground following its formal introduction in 1992. It started in medicine as evidence-based medicine (EBM) and spread to other fields such as dentistry, nursing, psychology, education, library and information science and other fields. Its basic principles are that all practical decisions made should 1) be based on research studies and 2) that these research studies are selected and interpreted according to some specific norms characteristic for EBP. Typically such norms disregard theoretical and qualitative studies and consider quantitative studies according to a narrow set of criteria of what counts as evidence. If such a narrow set of…

The United States is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse countries in the world. Many people of different customs and religions share the same space. Yet, the healthcare workforce does not represent the nation’s diverse population. Physician Assistant (PA), specifically, still remains predominantly white. According to the 2013 annual report from the National Commission on Certification of PAs, 85.6% of certified PAs indicated they were white. Given that diversity matters to healthcare and treatment of patients, many minority groups still experience health disparities despite the overall improvement in the healthcare system. Being an American of Vietnamese descent, I want to be a part of the nation’s movement in making PA become…
