Before the 19th century being a pedestrian and walking in busy areas meant taking a chance with you life every time you went outside. With no pathways to protect them civilians were forced to share the space with farm animals, horse-drawn carts,carriages along with street cars and wagons drawing the potential risk of being trampled. Research at the University of North Carolina for the U.S Department of Transportation found that the presence or absence of a sidewalk and a speed limit sign are significant factors in the likelihood of vehicle and pedestrian crash. The likelihood of a crash on a road with sidewalk was 88.2 percent lower than without a sidewalk, meaning that the installation of sidewalks could potentially reduce the likelihood of pedestrian/motor vehicle crashes by 88% in all situations.
