The Devil and Miss Prym and The Incredible Hulk have a vast range of similarities. Each of the stories main characters are faced with choices that don’t only effect them but everyone around them. The choices these characters make will change the world they live in but whether that change be for the good or the bad is yet to be seen. In this paper I will explore the similarities and the difference of a young women who lives in a small village working as a bartender, and a celebrated physicist who has had an unexpected complication to an experiment which has made him have a bit of a anger problem. The Devil and Miss Prym is a story about a girl exploring her choices. She has been given …show more content…
a unique opportunity to start a new life outside of her small town by a stranger. The stranger offers Miss Prym gold in exchange for her cooperation in a experiment about good verses evil. Miss Prym has to go tell her residents people that if one of them commits a murder then the town will inherit an abundance of gold. This is the first conflict in the story, the conflict is between Miss Prym also known as Chantal and The Stranger. Chantal doesn’t like that the stranger to brought this evil experiment to her small decent village. Chantal and The Stranger are described to have a personal internal battles of good and evil throughout the book. The good is represented by an angel and the bad is described as a devil. Chantal has a internal struggle with herself but makes the choice to tell the towns people about the gold. This is not the last conflict Chantal has verses herself, she often debates stealing a gold bar that is buried in the woods and running away. Chantal’s choices shape the story it is a regular pattern throughout the entire book when her choice helped save Berta’s life.(Coelho) The Incredible Hulk starts off showing you Bruce Banner transform into a monster known as The Hulk.
The first obvious conflict is Bruce verses the Hulk. Bruce isolates himself with the hopes of riding himself from his inner demon. While he is in isolation a General that is after the Hulk for military usage finds him and tries to capture him. Which brings us to the second conflict in this story Hulk verses Society. The military attempts to capture Bruce Banner so The Hulk unleashes himself in order to protect Banner. The Hulk turns back into Bruce Banner, Banner then realizes that he needs to find a cure so that the power of the Hulk doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. Banner goes back to where the Hulk was created and meet up with his love interest Elizabeth Ross. Ross serves as Bruce Banner’s angel, Ross helps Banner realize that The Hulk is not the devil but in fact an extension of himself.( Burrell, …show more content…
Film) When Ross and Banner are caught in another dangerous situation involving the General who has enlisted the help of Captain Blonski. Banner loses control once again the The Hulk. Once The Hulk appears he once again saves Banner and this time he saved Ross as well. After The Hulk saved Ross, Ross’s boyfriend Leonard was interrogated about their whereabouts. Leonard saw who the real devil was “He protected her you almost got her killed”, more people where beginning to see the true nature of The Hulk (Burrell,Film). The conflict between Hulk and Blonski has just begun and the conflict between The Hulk and The General raged on. The conflicts cause Banner to have to make choices on what to do with his own life. Banner makes the decision to risk death rather than risk hurting others by the means of the military. Now that both stories are summed up we can begin comparing them. Both of the stories have similar conflicts, Miss Prym battles herself when it comes to her choices just as Bruce Banner battled himself about his decisions. Both main characters battled with society as well. Miss Prym had to talk her whole town out of killing Berta and she succeeded. Bruce Banner had to prove to the world that the Hulk was not the villain of the tale when he saved New York from a mutated Captain Blonski. The last comparisons of conflicts will be against people, Bruce Banner versues the General who wanted to use him for military purposes and Miss Prym versus The Stranger who pulled he into his devious experiment. Of course both stories are different as well Bruce Banner split himself into two different people while Miss Prym only battled with her subconscious. (Detrick, Lecture) There was a point in The Incredible Hulk where Bruce Banner was prepared to die to keep the Hulk out of the militaries grasp. He was strapped on a table preparing for a risky experiment. The experiment did not kill him but the Hulk was suppose to be gone forever. This is known as the archetype the loss of a heroes power. Although Banner never considered Hulk to be a hero he failed to realize that he saved his life a numerous amount of times. Banner himself tried to be a hero by trying to contain a power he didn’t feel the world was ready for. After Banner got rid of the Hulk , Captain Blonski mutated himself and became Abomination which was a evil larger version of the Hulk, Banner risked his life jumping out of a plane not knowing if the Hulk would show up to save him. This archetype is known as the hero’s great deed. Banner plummeted to the ground and the Hulk reappeared in the knick of time.(Leterrier, Film) (Detrick, Lecture) The Devil and Miss Prym takes us on a journey for a week.
It takes you inside Miss Prym’s mind and thought process. There were a plethora of times throughout the book when Chantal made you believe she was going to steal the gold and runaway but she stayed and matured. That’s why the archetype for this story is Journey. Chanel never had an easy life, she was a orphanage and the only person who truly cared for her was dead. When Chantal went to the villagers to convince them that they were not murderers she was taking her final step within her own personal struggled journey. These two stories archetypes have similarities Hulk went on a similar journey like Miss Prym the difference is we could not see the struggle as much. The dialogue in Miss Prym allowed us to read Chantal’s thoughts which lead us into her journey. Hulk was not as forthcoming with dialogue.(Altshuler, Janero
38-43) The Hulk and Miss Prym both had decisions to make and they each made their decisions alone. Both characters may have sought out guidance but it was their decision in the end to take the paths they chose. The creators of these stories did a wonderful job showing the free will of the characters despite the devils influence. Existentialism emphasizes the existence of an individual persons free and responsible agent, which determines their future through their actions. Existentialism is the philosophy that can connect these two seemingly different stories.(Altshuler, Janero 510-513) All and All these stories may have different characters but when you reach the end they have the same outcome. A unlikely hero rises to the occasion, and whether that hero has to give a life or death speech to a crowd of their peers or slam a bus on a monsters they both accomplish their end goal. Over the course of both stories you were taken for a ride on a wave of emotions. The characters faced similar conflicts with themselves and a variety of antagonist such as Abomination and The General for The Hulk, and The Stranger and the village for Miss Prym. The Hulk and Miss Prym chose to change their perspective worlds for the better. As much as they are alike their is still one huge difference, it is unlikely Miss Prym will make a profession from her experiences, her circumstances called for brief bravery. The Hulk on the other hand will have to make his bravery last for the long haul, but these characters shared the same fighting spirit even if it was for an instant they were both heroes.
