Debra Wuichet is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker from University of Tennessee. She is the Director of Social Services at North Mississippi State Hospital and has been working there for sixteen years. Her topic of the presentation was mental illnesses and schizophrenia. I really enjoyed her speech because I had little previous knowledge of mental illness. Even though I have taken a few classes that discussed the illnesses, I can understand better with stories or a way to imagine a situation and Debra provided that. Information that I thought I knew, was stuff I had assumed from watching television shows and movies. Most of that information is inaccurate.…
The Civil War, a war fought during the 1860s, decided a great many things: slavery or freedom, south and north or unification. In the beginning of the war, the Northern African Americans were not allowed to join the Union Army and fight against the Southern oppressors. Alfred M. Green, while giving a speech in Philadelphia at the beginning of the war, urged African American to prepare to enlist. He also spoke subversively about the unfairness of the treatment of African Americans not only in the South but also in the North. Green uses a variety of methods to persuade his fellow African-Americans to prepare for war while also speaking out against the treatment of the African-Am. in the North.…

People in this discourse community struggle to produce “normal” speech and work toward the goal of being able to speak properly. The smaller distinctions within speech disorders are articulation, fluency, and voice. People within the articulation discourse community struggle with producing proper speech sounds or consonant and vowel sounds. People within this community would be people with lips, people who have difficulty with blends or any other issue of the sort. Fluency disorders disturb the flow of speaking and can also include tension and mannerisms. This disorder can be described by the rate at which people speak, their rhythm, and repetitions. The main example of this sort of disorder is stuttering. Lastly, another discourse community is voice disorders. This has to do with people who have an abnormal voice for the individual. This can mean that a person’s voice has an atypical tone, volume, or quality for his/her age and/or…

‘They were a weird mob, the Australians of 2013’ is written by Hugh Mackay and is an opinion piece that appeared in The Saturday Age on the 26th of January, 2013. It discusses the issues that are currently facing Australia and how as a nation these problems are still left unaddressed. Hugh Mackay believes that addressing these issues will improve our Australian identity and bring us closer together as a nation. He attempts to communicate with as many Australians as he can with these various issues such as asylum seekers, different school funding, global warming and tries to target those that may have a vested interest. He communicates with his wider audience in a condescending tone and presents his opinion in a satirical form by pretending to be from 50 years into the future.…

I don’t know. What I do know – and what I have grappled with over the past several years – is that I was not alone in this struggle. Stuttering can be crippling and it can touch anyone. At some point I realized that having a stutter isn’t something to conceal, but rather embrace. I was…

The impact of stuttering on a person's functioning and emotional state can be severe. This may include fears of having to enunciate specific vowels or consonants, fears of being caught stuttering in social situations, self-imposed isolation, anxiety, stress, shame, being a possible target of bullying (especially in children), having to use word substitution and rearrange words in a sentence to hide stuttering, or a feeling of "loss of control" during speech. Stuttering is sometimes popularly associated with anxiety but there is actually no such correlation (though as mentioned social anxiety may actually develop in individuals as a result of their stuttering). Stuttering is not an indication of reduced intelligence.…
