So, how do you choose to deal with the inevitability of suffering? Do you let it make you stronger and build you up, or do you let yourself hit rock bottom and camp out there? “Pain and hardship is inevitable for those of us who are trying to climb to the highest of heights in life. Hall did not know how he was going to react to something his wife getting cancer. “Not that my response has been perfect by any stretch, but I know that my love for my wife has grown stronger, and that I can weather more storms of life than I thought” (Hall). In addition, he gained a deeper appreciation of vulnerability. Through this experience he realized, “the reality of uncertainty is deeper than the illusion of certainty I used to live in. This realization brings a strange sense of peace. This experience has confronted me with my fundamental vulnerability and need for others” (Hall). Enduring Hardships Personal Response Everyone copes with hardships in different ways. Some people tend to escape their difficulties and start to seek short cuts, while others face the adversities and patiently overcome them. In “The Mercy” (by Philp Levine), the speaker’s mother faced the adversity of not knowing how to perform certain tasks that may seem ordinary in U.S.A, but she remained patient while she learned how to perform those tasks. When I was left, abandoned, in Fort Saskatchewan, I kept calm and I assured myself that my peers will notice my absence.…

In life we don’t get to select our path. What happens to us is completely out of our hands. We can’t even choose what makes us feel whole again. While happiness isn’t exactly a choice, learning to cope with adversity is a start. In the novel The Things They Carried, some men like Rat Kiley could not deal the emotions war inflicts and drove themselves insane. Likewise, the young girl knew how to handle her emotions and was able to survive the loss of her loved ones. Life isn’t always about your given circumstances, but the way you react to them. Coping is one of the few things we can still…

Adversity helps to build strong people and individuals and it gives them strength after they overcome their obstacles. Obstacles that are difficult to get through may provide new opportunities in a person’s life, and even though it can be argued that adversity has more negative effects that positive, adversity also unites people. Adversity brings people together with a common goal to face hardships that will create stronger bonds between people who may come from many different walks of…

Every day we are given a fresh start; another chance to move forward in our lives and accomplish the things we thrive to achieve day to day. A new day can also liberate us from our past mistakes and provide us with a chance to change our ways. We are all faced with misery and misfortune at points in our lives, some more than others. We must recognize that it is not the burden in itself that shapes who we are, but how well or how poorly we deal with the difficulties. Sometimes misfortunes can be seen in a negative light; because it seems unjust, therefore we response in a negative matter, and become negligent to change. Overcoming tragic events is what truly counts, for we are meant to live happily and in acceptance that there are things that we cannot change. In many cases, individuals seem to feel as though they’ve lost an amount so great that they are unable to free themselves of the pain. This perspective often leads to further suffering. A Temporary Matter by Jhumpa Lahou and Kiss Me by Andrew Pyper demonstrate a loss of identity, negligence towards communication, and eventually leading to the destruction of a relationship.…

Maintaining a capacity for empathy in contrast to pitying the pain of others creates a mirroring effect of compassion with potential to reach countless individuals beyond oneself. A disconnect lies within the use of sympathy to connect to others who are struggling and can often create a patronizing infliction that belittles the individual’s pain. Every individual fights a complex battle throughout their life, and the weapons to win one’s war can often be found in the advice from those who are willing to take the step to relate to another’s level. In the past three months, persisting through a challenge has allowed me to obtain an ability to give back to others that are dealing with similar feelings of discontent by sharing methods I used to bring myself out of confusion in my studies. By empathizing to the hardships…

The endeavor to rationalize and explicate one’s suffering functions as one of the foremost features of the human condition. For millennia, humans have habitually questioned the purpose of one’s suffering; and, with various theories and explanations, sought to rationalize it. As suffering often appears random or unmerited, many teachers, philosophers, and leaders have claimed a monopoly on the answer to this question. One would be hard pressed to find a religion or a philosophy that neither addresses nor justifies human suffering. In fact, it is in times of great suffering when people gaze upwards towards the heavens, and towards people who they believe possess the best answer for society’s ills. It is in this paradigm that both Confucian and…

Pain has been a constant part of who I am and a constant reminder of who I want to be. I’m not a strong academic student, but my goal to play college football has served as my academic motivation. In a way, academics is one of my trials and pains. Make no mistake, my inspiration behind the expression “No Pain, No Gain” is the physical pain that reminds me daily not to give up. Not to fall victim and walk life on a crutch. After writing this paper, I realize that God gives us free will despite the consequences, that he uses evil to show how corrupt the world is, and that he uses evil to show his glory. The suffering that we experience in life will be painful, but we should remember that we never have to face the suffering alone. We have the support of God and the support of the people around us. It is my belief that if suffering and evil will never stop, then neither will the concepts of comfort and…
