The Influence Of Racism

During a meeting with DREAMS, they voiced legitimate concerns about racial tensions here on campus. The DREAMS’ goal is to be treated equally and fairly in all matters. They are not asking for special consideration or privilege, only that the issues that affect them and reduce the quality of education and college experience be listened to and evaluated objectively, without the influence of personal bias.

A reminder of our mission:
We will serve as partners with our citizens to maintain a safe and peaceful community. We are committed to the preservation of life, protection of property, and safeguarding individual liberties. We are dedicated to accomplishing this with integrity and professionalism through a "Community Policing Model".

To achieve full understanding of racism you must imagine yourself in a situation where you are one of a handful of people who receive veiled or, at times, overt actions and words that make you feel unwelcomed, unappreciated, and less than equal. You have nowhere to turn, every office, every position from CEO to janitor is filled by older versions of the people that subject you to their bias. There is no one who has experienced what you are facing. Your only outlet is to talk to those like you who face the same injustices. This only feeds the frustration, sometimes to the point of rage.
