The Influence Of Zero's Friendship
What would you dig holes in a dessert for? What if you had no choice? This is the case with Stanley Yelnats. He had to dig holes in a dessert for a crime he did not commit. Through the influence of Zero’s friendship, Stanley changes from being a timid boy to a brave young man.

Stanley Yelnats is a timid boy at the beginning of the novel. To show that there are three pieces of text evidence collected. The first one is “His math teacher, Mrs. Bell, taught ratios. As an example she choose the heaviest and lightest kid in the class, and made them weigh themselves. Stanley weighed three times as much as the other boy.”(Sachar 7) That text evidence shows that Stanley didn’t stand up for himself when even teachers teased him. He remained shy and

To show that there are three pieces of text evidence gathered. The first one is “ Stanley stood up to the Warden saying why can’t I dig my hole and teach Zero as well? (Sachar 139) That piece of text evidence proves that Stanley has to stand up for it not Zero because all of it is going to come on Stanley. Stanley could not even talk to the Warden in the start but only because of Zero, Stanley is willing to do it. The second piece of evidence is that “ Stanley’s throat was dry. He was weak and exhausted yet as bad as he felt he knew that Zero felt ten times worse.” (Sachar 162) That evidence shows that Zero motivated him to keep moving on and walking straight ahead. Finally, the last piece of text evidence is “ He dug with his hands until he found the leather handle, and pulled the suitcase up and out of the dirt. “ I got it” he exclaimed. “You did it” Zero said. “ We did it” Stanley said.(Sachar 202) That shows that Stanley knew that even Zero was a big part for finding the treasure even though they didn’t expect to find it. It even shows that when Stanley wasn’t friends with Zero in the start and now he is. That all shows that Stanley became a better person by Zero’s influence. He was motivated enough for going up the mountain as far as Zero could go he could …show more content…
To show that there are three pieces of text evidences. The first one is… “ Stanley felt tiny claws dig into the side of his face as the lizard pulled itself off his neck and up past his chin. “ It won’t be long now,” the Warden said. Stanley could hear his heartbeat. Each beat told him he was still alive, at least for one more second.” (Sachar 206) This first piece of text evidence shows that Stanley was brave enough to handle it and, he didn’t even scream for help. Now moving on next piece of text evidence is… “ Stanley stopped and looked at Zero. He couldn’t leave him here. Zero gave him the thumbs up sign. “I can’t leave Hector.” ( Sachar 219) This second text evidence shows that Stanley is not shy to say that he wants to take Zero along with him. He does not feel scared or shy at all to say it in front of the Warden. The last evidence is… “Will you do me a favour?” asked Squid. “ I guess,” Stanley agreed, somewhat hesitantly. Squid wrote down a phone number which he gave to Stanley. “ Call my mom for me, okay? Tell her I was sorry. Tell her Alan was sorry. Stanley promised he would.” (Sachar 221) That last piece of evidence shows that Stanley does not refuse and is not shy enough but brave and bold enough to do it for Squid. Finally, all of that beautiful text evidence shows that Stanley is very very brave and bold to do more things in life

Regardless he was a capable pianist or he was not, they did not want to see him as a pianist. The audience, in fact, did not want to see him in his role and space that he was thought he had deserved it. For Stanley, it is yet not clear who has done that to him, whether the audience in a fixed conspiracy have done so or it was an order by the authority in power. However, his identity is taken away and his space is violated. Thus in lieu of such space and position, he validated his new position in a domestic space of a boarding house where his attendant is a mother-mistress figure, Meg. In a place like womb which is positive and beneficent to Stanley, he develops his space and play his role desirably, but as the plot continues, his space is occupied and his identity faded away. Thus, his credibility and acceptance wanes. Stanley’s notion regarding the concert and the two sinister guests remain unclear until they enter the boarding house as he senses the menace. He tries to disappoint them to stay in house. But the threat comes to surface when the intruders forced him to sit down and they engaged with him in a verbal…

The main dispute for Stanley was breaking his family curse. Although he didn't know if it was even real and that he had broken it , it was clear for the audience watching the movie that he had. The curse was put on his family more than 100 years ago when the first Yelnats, Elya Yelnats went to a fortune teller called Madame Zeroni. She made him a deal that he could have one of her small pigs if he carried Madame Zeroni up the mountain when he was done making the pig nice and fat so he could give it to the father of the girl of his dreams. When he noticed that the girl really was stupid like Madame Zeroni warmed him he decided to move from Lativia to America. However he forgot to carry Madame Zeroni up the mountain so she put a curse on his family forever. This was portrayed by a dissolve of Madame Zeroni repeating that she will put a curse on his family to Elya leaving Lativia. The low angle of Madame Zeroni's face made it obvious that she was not kidding and very serious about the curse. When Stanely carried Hectoria Zeroni (a descendant of…

-In the end, Stanley's down-to-earth character proves harmfully crude and brutish. His chief amusements are gambling, bowling, sex, and drinking, and he lacks ideals and imagination. His disturbing, degenerate nature, first hinted at when he beats his wife, is fully evident after he rapes his sister-in-law. Stanley shows no remorse for his brutal actions. The play ends with an image of Stanley as the ideal family man, comforting his wife as she holds their newborn child. The wrongfulness of this representation, given what we have learned about him in the play, ironically calls into question society's decision to ostracize Blanche.…

Stanley first shows signs of villainy in scene three, through his need to be dominant which foreshadows the conflict between him and Blanche which, later, leads to the rape. At the start of the scene, he tries to assert his authority by telling Stella and Blanche to “cut out that conversation in there!” Throughout the scene, when he feels that he is losing control and authority, he loses his temper; one trait of a traditional villain, in the form of striking Stella after she yells at him – “Drunk – drunk – animal thing, you!” It is clear to the audience that Stanley would have liked to hit Blanche instead. The fact Williams stages the…

To begin, one of the most easy to depict traits Stanley showcases is his courage he portrays this not thinking of the possible outcome but by doing what he knows is right. One way Stanley reveals his courage to stand up for others and himself not by thinking of the possible consequences, but shows his courage when he stands up to discrimination for example when a fellow worker named Andrew who is African American was cleaning the floor when he placed his broom against a table which suddenly slipped and knocked over a can of Linseed oil and ruins some brand new hats which Stanley’s boss Mr. Stroheim decided to take the value of the hats and take it out of Andrew’s paycheck, then Stanley said to Mr. Stroheim “I didn’t think that was fair. It wasn’t Andrews fault”(Simon 24).Thus showing Stanley’s Courage standing up for…

Stanley looks past the fake front that people put on and focuses on what is real and ignores the “Hollywood glamour” and lies that surround them (39). Stanley does not want any deviation from what is known to be true and wants “no ifs, ands, or buts” (43). Deep down Stanley needs to unearth any falsehoods when anyone feeds him a “pack of lies” no matter how dark they are (118). Regardless of the awful truths of Blanche’s life, Stanley states the truth in the simplest sense, and he finally reveals Blanche is not “such a refined and particular girl” as he gives out her dark truths. He pushes away Blanche’s pleasant dream and posters the harsh truth of Blanche’s problems in plain sight so no one, not Mitch, Stella, or even Blanche can not miss it. Ultimately, Stanley feels no empathy for anyone, and digs up the lies and falsehoods that surround…

I support the blank slate theory because in the very beginning of the book Stanley’s stepmother encourages him to act in deviant behavior. “One day my stepmother told William to take me to the railroad yard to break into box-cars.” (52-53). So Stanley has been taken under the wing of his step-brother who is stealing stuff for there stepmother, in return they are rewarded for stealing. This is a perfect example of an exposing Stanley to a positive outlook on crime. With this happening it kick started Stanley’s deviant behavior he began stealing for fun for many years, constantly being picked up by the police and taken to detentions homes which were not much of a punishment for him. Stanley enjoyed being in the detention home more than his real home so the consequence for his criminal behavior almost was a reward for him.…

In the story, one of the themes are to always respect ones promises and to fulfill them or you had to face the consequences. This is shown when Elya Yelnats does not fulfill his promise to Madame Zeroni and soon after, pays the price. In the novel, Madame Zeroni warns Elya “ That if he failed to do so, he would be cursed for eternity.” And at the time “…he thought nothing of the curse and as a boy he was carefree.” This shows that all people should fulfill their promises so we do not suffer the consequences. This positions the readers to feel sorry for Stanley because the actions of his great-great-grandfather has affected Stanley’s life even if he has done nothing.…
