In the story, the counselor, Mr Pendanski was asking Zero, very sarcastically, if he knew how to say different spelled-out words. Zero knew everyone expected him to be wrong, so he took a shovel, and Mr Pendanski across the face. He rebelled and ran away, as far as he could go, across the lake. “Zero took the shovel. Then he swung it like a baseball bat. The brutal blade smashed across Mr Pendanskis face… Zero kept backing up, out past the cluster of holes the boys had been digging, then father and farther out onto the lake.” (Sachar, 139).
