The Jerry Sandusky Scandal
The Jerry Sandusky scandal involved his involvement with abusing young boys and men in 2010 (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2013). Since the trial and Sandusky’s conviction of 45 counts of child abuse in 2012, there has been more information about case. Since the 2012 trial, Sandusky requested for a new trial or for the dismissal of his charges, however, it was denied (Scolforo, 2017). Sandusky still says he is innocent and wrongly convicted.
Joe Paterno, the Head Football Coach at Penn State during the time of the scandal, stated that he had no knowledge at the time of the child abuse or molestation by Jerry Sandusky until Mike McQueary told him about the encounter he witnessed in 2002. The same time Sandusky was employed with Penn State, so was Graham Spanier, the President of Penn State, Tim Curley, Athletic Director, and Gary Schultz, Vice President (Crandall, 2013). However, rather than informing the Board of Trustees and the police, they all decided to hold meetings and devise strategies. They were not charged the at the same time Sandusky was for the abuse, but now, they have pleaded to child endangerment over a decade later (Levy, 2017).
