Wait, what’s that in the water? Oh no, it’s coming near our ship! What could be that giant and undiscovered? What 12th century Norway didn’t know was that the giant squid was actually a Kraken. The Kraken is a giant creature, has lots of fascinating legends, and has a interesting history.
The Kraken is a giant creature. Not lots of people have heard of the Kraken, which lives off the Northern part of Norway and is an old Norwegian tale. Some people even said that he was the largest creature in the world, with a width of a mile and a half. “The Kraken is perhaps the largest monster ever imagined by mankind.” (Salvador 1) But later legends say that he is smaller, but still a monstrous size and is more squid like than crab-like. As said in the
giant, people even say. So why don’t we see him more often? Actually, some people in history have had supposive encounters with the Kraken. The Kraken has lots of fascinating legends. One of the legends was, “According to 13th century Norse legend, hero Örvar-Oddr and his son came into contact with two threatening creatures from the deep.” (Mentalfloss 1) Supposedly one of these or both were said to be a Kraken. And the problem was, no one knew what this was! As said, “Sailors were at sea for a very long time, so when they saw these animals, they had no idea what they were.” (Discovery 0:33) How were they supposed to know what this giant
Also, not lots of sightings have been found, but, “With lots of legends, the Kraken started with someproblem real, based on sightings of a real animal, the giant squid.” (Salvador 5) lots of people nowadays do think that the Kraken is just a myth, but where have those old ships gone? Did they very just disappear? Maybe the history may show.The Kraken has a very interesting story. Apparently, the history of this monsterous beast started around 12th century Norway. As said, “Although the term kraken is first found in print in Systema Naturae (Carolus Linnaeus - 1735), stories about this monster seem to date back to twelfth century Norway.” (Krystek 3) Plus, the history of all of the of the ships that have gone missing near there is interesting too. As said before, “After 10 ships went missing in 1782, de Montfort made the bold assumption that the Kraken was to blame.” (MentalFloss 10) But the problem is, no one knows. Even though the Kraken may be giant, nobody ever sees him. (Unless they are in his mouth) You would think that such a giant creature would be seen in the ocean once in a while.
