The Lady From Shanghai Theme
The Lady From Shanghai is one of the great classical film noir, which was directed by Orson Welles in 1948 and he adapted it from the novel called If I Die Before I Wake by Sherwood King in 1938. The theme of this movie is about conspiracy and murder, it tells a story of the intrigues between several characters and finally to the terrible collective madness and death. Even though this film only takes 87 minutes, every scene composition and camera movement, including the movie lines is unforgettable and memorable to me. For example, the surreal view of grotesque close-up, Chinese theatre montage, the crazy house and so on. Moreover, after watching The Lady from Shanghai again and again, I always have brand-new feelings and different understand …show more content…
As the movie began at thirty forty-nine seconds, Michael tells a fable about sharks in the dark deep sea try to eat each other and the whole ocean for the "savage beast" provides a fundamental performance space. Michael says, “You could sell the death reeking up out of the sea. I never saw anything worse until this little picnic tonight.” His shark tale just as the death of prophecy hanging over these conspirators. In my opinion, the boat on the ocean is the symbol of dangerous in this film, just like the sea full of sharks and they are the sharks that kill themselves. During this four-person scene, Elsa, Bannister and Grisby sit on the same side, the shot switches between Elsa and Michael several times. Although Michael could get out as an outsider, but the other side as Rosalie Knight (in the beginning of the film, he gave Elsa princess named Rosalie), he wants a Romance. So a station and a switch can represent the position of Mike clearly. The most interesting thing is before this scene; Elsa already predicted this unchangeable result with a Chinese proverb “Human nature is eternal. Therefore, one who follows his nature keeps his original nature, in the end” as bedding for the whole story covered Isaiah mystery. In general, people consider the sea adventure should be romantic and poetic. Nevertheless, as a great classic film noir, The Lady from Shanghai has the high pursuit and it would not satisfy the vulgar Hollywood style, which is the …show more content…
However, the plot and cinematography still draw my attention. After I analysing the four scenes, which is opening ocean scene, the shark tale scene, Chinese Theatre scene and crazy house scene in the essay, I found that even though the story of this great movie is simple and easy to understand, the theme of The Lady from Shanghai still worth audiences to think deeply and also watch again and again. Furthermore, it is not only is a classical movie but also like a book that people can collect and you will have different feelings every time you read

The theme of “The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant” is that it’s hard to truly love to different things with all your heart equally. You see this even in the first statement to a point, “There was a summer in my life when the only creature that seemed lovelier than a largemouth bass was Sheila Mant.” Also we see this when Sheila says “I think fishing is dumb…” when the main character clearly loves fishing more than anything except maybe Sheila herself. Right after that he decides that ,for at least the time being, Sheila is more important than fishing and so he starts to put his rod away when the biggest bass he’s ever seen gets snagged. This is the main conflict and where I believe we see the theme clearest as our main character struggling…

It causes the audience fear and raises the level of excitement towards the public. Rainsford, being the only survivor, leaves the audience wondering. Questioning how Rainsford is the only one who made it out alive out of all of the people. The author also shows a lot of different perspectives of expressing emotions throughout the film. Within this film it is clear that the styles of narration used by the screenwriter's are classic Hollywood narrative styles, which is when there is a "strong central protagonist and neatly resolved climax" (Bordwell and Thompson, 2005). Another way of proving that this is a classic narrated Hollywood film is by looking at what Bordwell (2005), states as the action revolving around a central character that by the end of the film fulfills his/her goal. By looking at all of the above, the point argued in this essay is clear that this film is a typical Hollywood narrated film, even though there are some techniques used by the screenwriters and directors that lean towards the way non Hollywood films are narrated.…

Given that the Shiji is a framework for China’s early imperial political thought, it can be used to demonstrate the influence of women on politics during the rule of the Han dynasty. Empress Lü, in particular, is a key component to the understanding of these roles, since she was the only woman who reigned for several years during the Han. It is unclear whether the author was concerned with the character of Empress Lü, or whether the author was instead writing about a political system in which women given the power to rule almost always led to disaster.…

In the late 19th century, and early 20th century, movies were something of magic and mystery. The first 30 plus years (1895-1928) of film was known as the Silent Film Era, and within this time thousands of movies were produced and tens of thousands of movie theaters existed. It wasn’t until 1927 when “The Jazz Singer” released by Warner Bros. pictures, that the audience would hear a voice for the first time. This ushered in the Sound Era (1928-1944) and movies would never be the same. At first there were only sounds for titles or credits, but soon it evolved into musical scores. It soon became apparent that a well made score could make a bad film better and a good film could not…

The scene that make me hold my breath is the riding in the slum, The scene is noisy yet there is the aesthetic experience, the atmosphere of the scene is hot, sweaty and crowded, Compare to the sublime nature in The Assassin, Still Life’s aesthetic is more like looking into the daily of these people. The ship full of people and how the setting are old-looking, this still life of these Chinese formed another kind of beauty, the beauty construst with the people and setting itself. Back to The Assassin, the beauty is without human, the character in it are putting on these background, but the Still Life, the character themselves are part of the background as well. Both movies have scenes that makes people “wow”, the “wow” element, aesthetic experience, would makes audience thoughtless and focus on the screen and their consciousness is suspended and getting into the zone. The scene when the female protagonist is dancing with her soon to be ex-husband at the dock, behind there are other couple are dancing in the background, the concrete floor and the foggy air is forming a beautiful scene and all the focus is to the protagonist. The grey sky in the scene give me a sense of sentimental of the woman toward her ex-husband. There are no beautiful view of nature, but the way how the colour works makes me find the beauty in the concrete…

The two films that I shall be discussing in this essay are, ‘Water (2005)’, directed by Deepa Mehta and ‘Chungking Express (1994)’, directed by Wong Kar-wai. ‘Water’ and ‘Chungking Express’ are two very well-known Asian films. However, they are both set in two completely different era’s in time. Firstly, ‘Water’ is set in a 1930’s India still under British rule and the second ‘Chungking Express’, in a postmodern city. We can see comparisons in both films in terms of gender. However, there are also many contrasts between these two films in terms of the representation of gender. In this essay I will be comparing and contrasting the representations of gender in both ‘Water’ and ‘Chungking Express’.…

In the film “Surat”, produced and directed by the 2 BSECE-A, I was really surprised because my friend, April Mae Tulang, is the lady protagonist in the film. It was a tragic love story between a teacher and a rebel. It was a nice film and story, but for me the ending is a bit predictable one, the guy died and the teacher became an old maid. Let’s go to the film “Kulta”, from 2 ABPolSci. This film is a tragic-family story. The story was based from the reality today. In the film, they were orphans, but still a happy family. Not until when the youngest of them got sick, and she really needed to get in the hospital. Because of being penniless, the oldest son took the risk of being a bomb carrier in exchange of money. It was a reality-based film. It’s just, I can’t understand what were they’re saying because there’s no subtitle in the movie. While in “Ayuda”, from 3ABEnglish, is one of the short-films that I’ve been enjoyed watching. I enjoyed this film simply because we can related based from the story! It’s a college love story. The cast of the film played each of their roles nice and easy. But we were wondering about the ending of the film. It was totally fuzzy why the guy holds a mini-knife. Will he take suicide? Or will he kill the antagonist? It’s very confusing. And the film which I mostly liked, the “Incognito”, which is from DevChem (students from Development Communications and Chemistry department) really amazed me. The main cast were so amazing in performing their different roles. And the…

    Movie Reflection

Last week I have watched a few movies, but I found only one movie very interesting. This movie is called “Silent Hill”. This movie carries 3 important points which can attract my mind. First, it hides a mystery. It seems that there is a terrible place where there are a lot of monster, but we can’t know clearly where it is. This place always appears when a girl, who is the most important actress, walks or goes somewhere alone, and it always appears in her dream as well. But it disappears when the real people come near her. It frightens her every day and night. That place is very strange. Second, this movie shows the bravery of the girl. She dares go to find her father at that strange place although she knows that it is dangerous, for she wants to help her father who was caught by the monster there. She decided without hesitation, and then she started her adventure. Finally, she found a coin which can show her the way to go to that place that is called “Silent Hill”. She is a very brave girl. Third, this movie shows the deep love of daughter to father, and husband to wife. The love between daughter to father is when the girl dares risk her life to help her father from the silent hill. Another one, the love between husband to wife is that her father decides to continue to live in a silent hill to find his wife, who is caught into the silent hill for a long time ago, although his daughter can help him go out. So that at the end of the story, her father still lives in silent hill and let her come out. It is so sensitive. I really like this movie, and I will watch it again when I have…
