The Lady or the Tiger
He turned, and with a firm and rapid step he walked across the empty space. Every heart stopped beating, every breath was held, every eye was fixed immovably upon that man. Without the slightest hesitation, he went to the door on the right, and opened it.
The boy was scared but he didn’t show any fear as he walked in the arena. He really didn’t want to die at that point in time. He knew it was his fault he had gotten into this mess. If he had just not fallen in love with the princess he wouldn’t be in this situation right now. Even though he was proud because he loved the princess with all his heart. He was willing to die for her, but at the same time he wanted to live even if it meant being with another girl. The boy

The tiger started sprinting towards the young man. The boy didn’t move, he believed if he was going to die it was for a reason. The tiger stopped right in front of the boy. He started to sniff the boy all around seeing if he was good enough to eat. At this point everybody became speechless, then the king yelled “ eat him already!”. Which made the tiger furious, so he started leaping towards the king. The king started laughing and teasing the tiger as he got closer by putting his hand over the stage as if he was going to pet the tiger, but what he didn’t know was that tigers could leap really high. Everybody was laughing with the king. Then all of a sudden the tiger jumped and snatched the king's arm with its body coming along with it. The tiger devoured the king in one bite. Every body then starting to shriek in fear while trying to get out of there. The princess started crying as the boy climbed up the wall of the arena trying to get to her. In the story, “The Tiger or the Lady” by Frank Stockton”, a young handsome man, whom the princess was in loved with, was accused of committing the horrible crime of loving the beautiful, barbaric princess. Therefore, he was sent to the King’s Arena, where he shall be put to death. The “semi- barbaric king” (1) found that this joy of human torture was most genial, bringing great pleasure to his hateful heart and empty soul. Now in this court justice system, if the accused were placed in the arena, his fate was decided by to wooden doors. Behind one door was a vicious, lethal tiger, and behind the other was a beautiful maiden. If a person were to choose the door holding the tiger, they would be immediately eaten and considered guilty (1); but if the suspect were to open the door containing the woman the accused person would then be considered innocent, (2) and the two would then marry, having a celebration in his honor. His loving princess has directed him open the door on the right, but the question is which door is it? I believe that because of the princess’s barbaric moiety, jealousy, and hatred that she has pointed to the door with the vicious man- eating tiger with her boyfriend dying a horrible painful death.…

Throughout the short story “The Lady or the Tiger?” by Frank Stockton, tension and suspense are created by making the audience wonder what is behind the door. There is a kingdom in which the king always gets his way. He decide to create a semi-barbaric, yet civilized form of a justice system, where any person accused of a crime will be given the choice of two doors. One has a tiger that will viciously maul and murder the person, “proving” their guilt. One has a maiden behind it, and the accused is immediately married to this lady, no matter the circumstance. The king’s daughter has a lover, but the king finds out about it, and sends the lover to his trial. The princess knows which door leads to the tiger and which leads to the lady, and indicates which choice the lover should choose (the right door, which he chooses). The author keeps the audience in suspense by discussing, at length, the gravity of the princess’ decision, and the…

    The Lady, or the Tiger?

In “The Lady, or the Tiger?” by Frank Stockton, a woman, so distraught at the fact that she is losing her lover, ushers her love toward one of two doors. This door either contains a tiger, which will gruesomely maul him, or a woman who he is forced to take as his bride. The reader is led to believe that the woman points her lover to the door containing a ferocious tiger. A quote which supports the thesis that the princess had sent her lover to his doom is, “How often, in her waking hours and in her dreams, had she started in wild horror, and covered her face with her hands as she thought of her lover opening the door on the other side of which waited the cruel fangs of the tiger!” (Stockton 6). This quote illustrates how the hot-headed and semi-barbaric princess often dreams about sending her love to his doom rather than having to lose him to another girl. The princess thought that if she had lost him, then no one else has the right to have him. Additionally, “But how much oftener had she seen him at the other door! How in her grievous reveries had she gnashed her teeth, and torn her hair, when she saw his start of rapturous delight as he opened the door of the lady! How her soul had burned in agony when she had seen him rush to meet that woman, with her flushing cheek and sparkling eye of triumph” (6). This quote also explains how much agony the princess would have to face if her lover were to open the door with his future wife inside. The princess, through her selfishness, was not willing to see the enlightened look on her lovers face when he saw his future bride exit the door. Furthermore, “Would it not be better for him to die at once, and wait for her to join him in the future?” (7). The princess thought that she could be rejoined in heaven with the young man who she had fallen in love with because she knew that her father would never allow her to be with him again on Earth. She believed in the afterlife and I believe that she thought that he would be happier…

After reading Frank R. Stockton's story, "The Lady or the Tiger", I found that the princess was in dismay caught between the turmoil of love and jealousy. She had an intimate love for the boyfriend, but her semi barbaric mind set along with her jealous nature endlessly swayed and clouded her mind. Her father king added fuel to the flame of her jealousy and aimed the punishment towards her, not so much at her lover. This was evident in the passage of the story that exclaimed, "... she knew who the lady was.…
