The Lady Or The Tiger Short Story
Life is minutes, eternity is hours, what is death? As he walked toward the door on the right the prince kept thinking this over and over, again and again. As he walked toward the door, he expected death, but what is death? He opened the door and there was a lady, a beautiful lady, just not his lady. He should feel excited, infact he should be rejoicing, instead he wishes he had met the tiger. Joyous bells start clanging in the distance and he is married to a woman he does not love. He runs to the other door and flings it open.

Flashback

“What happens if he finds out we are together? My lady
“He can’t my love.” She replied in her singsong voice.

I trust you to make the right choice. My life is in your hands.” He backed away and two guards entered through the doors, grasped him by his arms and dragged him away. The princess could only stare for what felt like eternity. When she broke her shock, she was enraged. Knowing full well what she might do have repercussions she raced to her father's chamber.

“Father what have you done! My love is currently being tossed into the dungeon like a dirty ragdoll. WHY!”
“It’s for the best my dove, for the welfare of everybody.”
“How does my love life affect the kingdom? Father, that's not it, I do what you ask I even go along with your stupid idea of a fair judgment. That’s just not enough for you is it. You just want to make sure that nobody else can have me but you. That you and you alone will always have a claim on me.
“As for your stupid judgment, you might as well flip a stupid coin!” She then proceeded to show him how to flip something else as well..
“Get in your chamber now or so help me, you will go into that arena with him.” The king stated rather forcefully.
“That would be preferable to having to listen to you.” She snapped

Within this story, the royal family is given distinguishing traits that explain why the princess would choose death upon her lover. Because she is the daughter of a “semi-barbaric king” (Stockton 2), the thought of her companion getting eaten by a tiger might be more accepting than losing him to another woman. The princess’s uncivilized mind would overrule the appropriate decision, and choose the tiger.…

In Amber Bierce’s harrowing short story “Chickamauga,” the author portrays that war is not all honor and glory, but momentous and deathly through imagery. In a make-believe game of battle, a little boy ventured further than his normal grounds and “went forward toward the dark inclosing wood.” The writer uses the words “dark” and “inclosing” to make the reader feel more on edge, and assemble an ominous atmosphere. It hints that this boy is no longer playing a recreation for children. Later on, the child runs into damaged soldiers who’s “creeping figures” had been lit up by a “strange red light,” giving them “monstrous” shadows.…

The Dragon Lady flew through the air at a maximum altitude of seventy-thousand feet snapping high quality photographs for the Central Intelligence Agency back in the United States. At altitudes limiting the effect of enemy air defense missiles the Dragon Lady flew mission after mission providing images of Soviet missile systems and other military apparatus. On May 1, 1960, advanced Soviet air defense missiles shot down the first Dragon Lady with its pilot, Francis Gary Powers, over Soviet territory. The Dragon Lady, more commonly known as the U-2 Spy plane, did not survive, but Powers did not share the same fate. Markus Wolf, head of the East German foreign intelligence, states that, “Powers was sentenced to only ten years in jail, and my KGB…

Because she is clearly in love with him, she seems to stand firm on her opinion that the thought of another woman being with him is sickening. Finally, the princess believes that it would be less complicated if he were to die so that she may see him again in the afterlife. The princess was repulsive toward the idea of the ‘young man’ being with another woman. Therefore, if he were to die by the hands (or paws; tee hee) of the tiger, then they could be together in the afterlife. Furthermore, it was illegal for a servant/peasant to be in love with the princess; therefore, making the decision easier. If the two lovers cannot be together while they were alive, then they could be together in the afterlife when the two of them had both passed. In conclusion, the princess signaled for the ‘young man’ to open the door with the tiger because: the princess was semi-barbaric and relished in the sight of blood/violence, she was more afraid of seeing the ‘young man’ with another woman, and they could simply be with one another in the afterlife (due to the laws that outlaw all romance between royalty and non-royalty.) So the next person that is to read the shocking story, choose correctly when given the honoring opportunity to select the…
