The Last Apprentice
Character Profile Report I read an amazing book called The Last Apprentice: Curse of the Bane. This is the second book in the series. It is about a 12-year old kid, named Tom, becoming an apprentice for the county spook. The spook’s job is to help the people in the county get rid of ghosts, ghasts, boggarts, and other creatures from the dark. Tom is special because he is the seventh son of a seventh son. Usually, the oldest son gets the most important jobs, and in the end, inherits the farm. Tom’s dad did not inherit anything. He was a sailor. One day, he found a lovely woman pinned to a rock. He helped her free, and in return, she bought him his old farm back from his oldest brother. They got married. Then, they had seven sons. They kept …show more content…
He was to be the Spook’s apprentice. In his first few months, he rid the county of a dreaded ghost, Mother Malkin, whom he accidentally set free. Now he faced an even tougher task, to rid the county of a beast named, the Bane. The Bane almost killed his master two years ago. Now the Bane needs to be killed. Tom successfully kills the Bane. Tom’s two most paramount character qualities are scared and curious. Tom Ward is scared at many times in the story. In chapter three, on page sixty-seven, while Tom and the Spook were setting off to deal with the Bane, Tom said, “I had a bad feeling of what lay ahead, a strong sense of danger.” This proves that Tom was scared because it shows his fear of facing the Bane. In chapter six, on pages 110, and 111, it says how Tom was afraid of going to the cathedral at night. If he goes, he could be threatened by the Bane, …show more content…
He is an amazing decision maker. He made the right decision to go talk to Father Carnis about the Spook’s danger. Although it did not turn out perfectly, Brother Peter let him go, and he escaped unharmed. He is also very stealthy. He moves swiftly, and sneakily, which is why he is awesome at escaping tough situations. He escaped the Quisitor’s army when they were about to capture him, as he was jail breaking the prisoners. He loves his family very much. Love is the strongest feeling of all. Thinking about his family keeps the Bane out of his mind because the Bane can’t break through love. Which is just like in the real life when love keeps the dark thoughts away. When you are thinking or are with, someone whom you love very dearly, you feel a strong sense of protection, and safety. When Tom was in the catacombs, the only thing that prevented the bane from killing him was love. Tom thought about his family, and Alice, a witch who Tom loves, which kept him safe from the Bane, and in turn, killed the Bane. Love is

Toms actions catch up with him when the Devil takes his soul in the end and all his possessions turn to dust/wood chips. This shows that he was hiding the real truth and it came up and got revenge on him. He tried hard to not let the truth out but the devil got him. The narrator says, "On searching his coffers all his bonds and mortgage were found reduced in cinders. In places of gold silver, his iron chest was filled with chips and shavings : two skeletons lay in his stable instead of his half starved horses, and the very next data his house took fire and burnt to the ground" (Poe 322). As he made his journey through the forest however he was tempted by the “Devil” named Old Scratch, who offers him riches, shortcuts etc. in exchange for his soul. Tom who once was not foolish, falls to this trap and instead goes to the Devil. He is also a very materialistic and lazy unmotivated individual, as stated in the story, “Tom was a hard-minded fellow, not easily daunted, and he had lived so long with a termagant wife, that he did not fear the Devil” (Irving 183). The devious devil had successfully tempted Tom in so many ways that he had left in him by the end of the story and felt that he “might have felt disposed to sell himself to the Devil” (Irving 183). Similarly Young Goodman Brown went through a similar experience as he made his way through the forest as the devil tempted him as…

Mr. Tom’s words that make him grotesque are that he says “People do anything” and “People don’t care how they lie”. Actions that make him grotesque are that he only marries Lucynell for the money and car, basically he used her. Also the first thing he mentions when he first gets to the Craters house is the car. Another action that makes him grotesque is that he was at The Hot Spot with Lucynell, went for a drive and never came back for her. This makes him grotesque because he left a mentally challenged girl by…

As Tom looks up to Legree and tells him he would give everything in him if it was needed, Stowe illustrates the ability the human spirit has to overcome suffering. With Tom being the example, Stowe uses the Christian faith as fuel to his ability to be Christ-like throughout the novel. As Tom chooses to stay and not flee with Eliza, he feels it was the right thing to do. When he is sold from the Shelby’s to Haley, then to the St. Claires, then finally ending with Legree, Tom consistently obeyed his master despite their good or bad nature. Stowe describes him has “childlike” at times, representing the goodness of God. In this quote, Tom maintains a level of affection that a child would have towards a parent. The child still seeks approval and giving endless love regardless of how their parent treats them.…

Joseph Delaney’s Seventh Son book is a fantasy book based on witches and magic. The story starts out by introducing us to the main character, Tom, and his family. Tom lived on a farm with his six brothers, parents, and sister in-law, Ellie. When it was time for Tom to get a job, his father had to find an apprenticeship for him. Tom was the seventh son of the seventh son. It was time for his father to find him a job and the only one left was to be the spooks apprentice. He was sent on a one-month trial with the spook and during that month the spook would send Tom down, since the house was on the hill, to get the things that they needed from the village. One day when he was going back up the hill with a sack of food and other things, a gang…

There is one more of his wardmates nevertheless, he was a jerk to Will. When Wil was 15 years old, he along with his wardmates were allowed to be an apprentice of a certain craft master. While it takes most of the book to fully develop his mature character, his progress is greatly affected by the people he hangs out with. One instance where Tom shows his maturity is when he told the truth about the murder. He thought about Potter’s life before his own. In the trial he says, “’— and as the doctor fetched the board around and Muff Potter fell, Injun Joe jumped with the knife and — ‘” This was brave of Tom to speak up even know his own life was at risk. Another example of when Tom showed maturity was with Becky Thatcher. The teacher says, “’Rebecca Thatcher’— ‘did you tear — no, look me in the face’ — ‘did you tear this book?’ A thought shot like lightning through Tom’s brain. He sprang to his feet and shouted — ‘I done it!’” This quote shows how Tom is in love with her and shows great compassion and kindness towards her. He steps up and takes the blame for something he didn’t do in order to protect her from getting in trouble. This situation, along with others with Becky, helps him grow in his thoughtfulness and compassion. The book ends with Tom protecting and comforting Becky when she was scared. I believe Mark Twain ends the book with this to emphasize the extreme difference between Tom at the beginning and at the end of the book.…

If there is an antagonist or a villain in the novel, it is Tom. He is racist and he generally mistreats everyone he comes into contact with. Tom loves Daisy but he treats her more like a possession than a partner. He is having an affair with Myrtle. During an apartment party with Nick and Myrtle's friends, Tom breaks Myrtle's nose for having mentioned Daisy's name. Tom is also condescending to George, Myrtle's husband. Tom also seizes the opportunity to implicate Gatsby in Myrtle's death, thereby indirectly leading to Gatsby's and (more indirectly) to George's deaths. Tom comes from money and is proud of his heritage.…

The novel begins with the affable, intrusive narrator outlining the nature of our hero. Joseph Andrews is the brother of Richardson’s Pamela and is of the same rustic parentage and patchy ancestry. At the age of ten years he found himself tending to animals as an apprentice to Sir Thomas Booby. It was in proving his worth as a horseman that he first caught the eye of Sir Thomas’s wife, Lady Booby, who employed him (now seventeen) as her footman.…
