The Leadership Role Of Brutus In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar

Secondly, Shakespeare represents the idea of Brutus having more power due to controlling the conspirators and letting Brutus himself in the leadership role. In Act Two Scene One there was a passage that shows how Brutus was leading the conspirators to do the right thing for Rome. “No, not an oath: if not the face of men/The sufferance of our souls, the time’s abuse/ -- If these be motives weak, break off bedtimes/And every man hence to his idle bed/………. If he do break the smallest particle/Of any promise that hath pass’d from him”(2.1.114-140). Brutus was using his own powers to control the conspirators, the conspirators trusted and followed Brutus. Brutus doesn’t know that he had pulled himself into the important role. He believes in his honorable
motives too strongly. His motives were too strong that it blinds him not knowing what he was doing and what he was planning of. In addition, Brutus’ speech to the conspirators in Act Two Scene One was showing how naive Brutus was to not kill Antony. “Our course will seem too bloody, Caius Cassius/To cut the head off and then hack the limbs, Like wrath in death and envy afterwards/ ………. For he can do no more than Caesar’s arm When Caesar’s head is off”(2.1.162-183). When Brutus said not to kill Antony, no one disapproves but only Cassius stands out. Because Brutus was so powerful, he doesn’t know that Anthony is powerful too, Brutus underestimates Anthony. Brutus didn’t listen to Cassius’ warning for Anthony because Brutus is too naive to have control in power. As you can see, this paragraph shows how Brutus is becoming more and more powerful leading himself deeper and deeper into the leadership role for the conspirators.
