The Lesson's Activities & Handouts
Topic
With more and more chances for English learners in china to communicate with English-speaking foreigners,it’s essential to develop their communication competence in English and how to achieve the goal has thus become the primary task of education as well as the whole society.Writing is such an important means of communication in written forms that its proper expressions of ideas and feelings directly determine the success of communication.

I choose English writing in senior high school as the research task from the perspective of transfer of mother tongue on it. With the research purpose, I collect data by means of think-loud protocol, test and interview during the research. The hypothesis:
1. Mother tongue is the main reason to cause poor performance in English writing of senior high school.
2. Negative transfer is more obvious in English writing than positive transfer in the whole writing process.

Subject of research
The subjects participating in the whole research are students from senior high school in China. They are distributed to different research instruments.

The subjects involved in the TA process are 8 students from Senior High School. They are picked out from two grades,4 in Grade One and the other 4 in Grade Two for the sake of convenience and rationality of the research.

Instead of eight students for TA research, altogether 1 04 students,53 from Grade One and 5 1 from Grade Two,participate in the translation test.Ninety-eight copies are selected for they conform to the requirements of writing, but the rest of them are excluded for they are short or not related with the topic. The reason why so many students are supposed to engage in test is that survey of large scale is more authoritative and representative.

Because the time is limited, the subjects participating in the interview are 16 students, 8 from Grade One and the other from Grade Two.As a matter of fact among the 16 students,8 of them are former subjects of think—aloud

Say it Solo (Messages From Hamlet’s Soliloquies) Throughout the Hamlet play, there are certain times when the main character says some things that Shakespeare’s audience may interpret in different ways. It’s even more hard to figure out what Shakespeare is meaning during his soliloquies that happen in the play. All three soliloquies in the first few acts have messages that go along with them. Hamlet is the character who says each one, and it is very apparent that he is feeling deep emotions in each act. When Shakespeare wrote this novel, it is very apparent that his intentions were to make the audience really think about what Hamlet was saying in his soliloquies.…

As English has been likely the most popular medium of instruction for many courses at higher education institutions, learning English will enable students to meet essential requirements in their academic subjects and perform well in the professional contexts (Adams & Keene, 2000). In these circumstances, the students are often demanded to submit some specific writing assignments like article reviews, proposals, projects or research reports. However, they are likely to face a number of writing problems in vocabulary, organization of ideas, grammar and referencing. The main causes of these issues may arise from internal English fundamentals (poor vocabulary, lack of knowledge and motivation), environmental reasons (the frequent use of native language, limited opportunities to practice English) and English teaching techniques (lack of writing practices; unskilled and inexperienced English teachers). In response to these writing problems, as pointed out by Russell (1991) and Ober (1992), it is recommended that several teaching practices, such as using fun mini-games to inspire students in learning English, reading academic-specific materials extensively and assigning additional volumes of writing tasks in discipline-specific courses, should be applied to strengthen students’ writing skills. In addition to teachers' efforts, the students are required to spend more time enriching their vocabulary and grammar as well as reading different sources of English academic writing.…
