“ The Worn Path”
The literary Work of Eudora Welty’s
Eudora Welty’s short story “ The Worn Path” was a very profound story filled with love, compassion, and sacrifices. This short story is also filled with many literary elements that greatly contributes to the theme of the story. This essay will describe the theme of the story as well as the point of view and character of the woman in the story. Eudora Welty was able to capture love, struggle, compassion and sacrifices in a way that allowed reader to connect with different aspects of these emotions. I believe many would agree that “ The Worn Path “ was a very heartwarming story as well as a good read.
The setting of the this story takes place in the south during a cold December day. A elderly woman by the name of Phoenix set out alone on a journey where she faced many obstacles and struggles along the way. Phoenix seemed to be familiar with the path and some of the struggles, yet it seemed as if she confronted new obstacles to slow her down. However, Phoenix was not afraid, nor did she show any fear when faced with such struggles that would have stopped many people in their tracks.
Being that Phoenix was an elderly woman and was taking such a journey on a cold day shows how determined she had to be to get to where she needed to go. Many may agree that her character only shows that she was brave, fearless, strong, and determined in the beginning of the story. Which then left the reader to wonder what is driving this woman to have such amazing characteristics. By the end of the story the narrator explains that the driving force behind Phoenix is character is her ill grandson whom she had left at home in order to retrieve his medication.
Although this character is not the narrator of this short story does not lessen her the character
