In exchange for this the little mermaid allows the sea witch to cut out her tongue as collateral. The little mermaid goes to the shore, takes the potion given to her by the sea witch and passes out. She is later awakened by the prince whom she had saved on her fifteenth birthday. The prince thinks he recognizes her as that girl who saved him, but sadly the mermaid cannot confirm his hypothesis because she is now without a tongue. The little mermaid and the prince start spending more time together but the prince is betrothed to a princess from another kingdom who had been on the beach when he awoke after the ship wreck. The mermaid’s sisters become worried about her and they make a deal with the sea witch as well: in exchange for their hair the sea witch gives them a knife that the mermaid can use to kill the prince, and his blood will turn her legs back into a tail. In the end the mermaid cannot bring herself to kill the prince so instead she throws the knife away expecting to become sea
