Discover New York- Review of Little Mermaid Professor: Trickovic
The Little Mermaid
The Broadway play which I went to see was located at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater, 205 West 46th street. This is considered the heart of the theater district in New York City. The play which I saw was The Little Mermaid presented by Disney. As an 18 year old male, I was not very fond of seeing a Disney play but, my girlfriend wanted to see the show so, I had to come tag along. In the rest of this paper I will give a review of how my day went: Getting to the play, the theater, the play itself, the surroundings, the people, the audience’s response, and other aspects of the show.
The show started at 8pm, so I decided it would be good to leave my neighborhood at about 6pm to account for the traffic and finding parking in Manhattan, as you can see I drove. We ended up leaving queens at about 6:30pm and getting to the location of the play at about 7:15pm. We made very good timing and there was very little traffic. The worst part of getting to the play was finding parking; we had to circle around the block about 10 times before we finally found someone pulling out of a spot. By this time it was about 7:45pm, we were 2 blocks …show more content…
away and it was very cold out. When we arrived at the theater front there was a very long line and they had everyone waiting outside, which I thought was very uncomfortable and unprofessional.
Finally we had our tickets scanned and were seated; the ushers were very good, knowing exactly where every seat was located. They also handed us both a program which gave us a brake down of the performances which would be taking place. We had very nice seats, in the front mezzanine, and the first row. The lighting of the theater was very bright and the stage was decorated with sea shells, star fish, coral, and other aquatic objects. All of these objects were glowing bright green, glowing in the dark. It was very presentable and looked very nice. The seats were not very comfortable but, we were able to deal with it. The room between the seats was also very small. A voice came through the speakers and told us that the play was about to begin and we should take our seats.
The play began with the curtains opening up quickly and the main characters Ariel and Flounder having a conversation.
There costumes seemed to be very nice but, I feel that Flounder’s costume could have been improved. The costumes of all the characters made it easy to distinguish who was who and they all had very good singing voices. My girlfriend also sings and she mentioned that they had very good voices. The orchestra played the theme music well and sounded spectacular. One thing which I disliked was that the orchestra was playing underneath the stage and it was very hard to see them. I feel they did not give enough recognition to the orchestra who play a very big role in the
play. Throughout the play the performances were very interesting to watch and they always kept the audience entertained and alive. I really liked the effects they had in order to portray being underwater like the bubbles in the background and the people floating in mid air as if they were swimming in real water. The performers all had on some type of skates on their feet to portray swimming through the ocean. They all did very well and showed to be trained and have such skills in performing. One thing that really annoyed me while watching the play was the usher approached us two times asking my girlfriend to put away her, “Camera”. The ironic part of this was that she did not have a camera on her presence! This I felt was very rude and I asked the usher his name to report him to the theater, which I later did not.
After the first half of the play which was about one hour there was an intermission for 15 minutes. They had snacks and drinks available for everyone who wanted to purchase in the back of the theater. At this time there was many people getting out of their seats and it caused much traffic in the aisles which were just big enough for two people to walk through. I went to purchase two sodas and Pringles chips, it was about 35 dollars for everything. Everything in Manhattan is over priced but, this was even more expensive. When I returned to my seat many people were walking into me and I felt it was very congested in the aisles. The show resumed very promptly and continued until about 12:15pm. It had a very good ending in which all of the actors were on stage performing at once. They all bowed and the audience gave a very large applause much greater than they did between the different acts. By the end of the play many people were upset and hoping for more! Everyone did not want the play to end but, all good things come to an end.
When the play ended I was talking to someone who also the saw the play and I asked them how they thought it was. They replied by saying that they did not like how some of the songs performed were not from the actual Little Mermaid movie. I wouldn’t know this because I haven’t really seen the movie. But from their perspective they thought it could have been improved. The children of the audience seemed to love the play and also the character of flounder which was performed by an actor about 10-12 years of age. This gave it a childish sense and greatly related to the children. One thing that I noticed was the children being scared by the dark scenes when the eels and bad characters of the play performed. But, these segments were very short and most of the play seemed to be very entertaining, funny, and filled with happiness.
After seeing this play and comparing it to others which I have seen, I would suggest that this is for a younger audience rather than people 18 and older. I would also suggest people who want to see a play to either take mass transit or even make future arrangements for parking if they are driving into the city because it can be a very big problem as we all know. I liked the play personally and I thought the tickets were worth it, you have to sacrifice in order to have fun! Overall it was a very good night out in the city which I happen to love. The surroundings are very nice and many places are open on Broadway at the time it ended if you wanted to grab a bite to eat or go shopping. Try going to a play sometime it was a very interesting experience and something different rather than just going to a movie or bowling.little
