The Love of My Life
In the short story "The Love of My Life," two teenagers make one bad decision and their lives are changed forever. The author, T. Coraghessan Boyle, wrote the story based on an actual news story that had occurred a few years back. The author does a great job of making the relationship between Jeremy and China seem so wonderful and almost innocent, that it is hard to be angry with them. The two characters in the story, Jeremy and China, are young and are head over heels for each other. The very first line of the story is all it takes to make the reader realize that these two youngsters share the true meaning of love, "they wore each other like a pair of socks." All of that changes when the two find out that China is pregnant. Instead of properly handling their situation, they have the baby and dispose of it in a dumpster at a motel. Although the story has a very upsetting plot, you can't help but feel some sympathy toward the characters. The beginning of the story starts out describing the great, young love that Jeremy and China had. They did everything with each other, spent almost every waking moment together, and rarely ever fought. Both teenagers were on a great track in life; graduating at the top of their high school class, both going to top colleges and well-liked by most. They would tell each other "I love you" more times in a day than they could keep track of. Every time they walked into a room they would kiss. They seemed to have the perfect relationship. Then, the summer before college would commence, they went on a week-long camping trip alone. Of course, being alone, they had the opportunity to have sex and enjoy their time together. Obviously caught in the heat of the moment, knowing they were out of condoms, they had sex anyway. One irrational decision led to their lives changing forever. Before going to school in the fall, China learned that she was pregnant. Out of immaturity, and fear, she decides to do nothing about it and hide

    My Soul Mate

Every person has his own special someone in their lives. I have always believed that we are born with a soul mate, a permanent partner in life. Others may not be too fortunate to meet their soul mates in this lifetime. However, others are indeed lucky to have found and met their long lost love and I am one of those fortunate ones. He was my classmate in college. He was one of the few people I really did not like, so to speak. He seemed so arrogant, conceited and over confident. Days passed after the first day of school, when gradually I had discovered how nice and kind he was. He always had a helping hand to any classmate in need. He was protective and caring especially to the girls in the class. If we had a classmate needing a ride home, he would be the first one to volunteer to drive that person home. Such simple gestures made me discount my first impression of him. Eventually he became one of my best buddies back then. Who would ever think that at the end of the line, he would be my husband now? I always have a smile painted on my face when I reminisce of the ups and downs of our relationship. My husband is a best friend, a critic and father-figure all rolled into one.…

While I have great moments and simple moments, many are so incredible that I could not begin to describe. However there is one moment in particular that is describable and very “life defining”.…

Most people would just mention their mom as the person who has greatly impacted their lives, but I would say my father as well affected my existence too before and after his death. Those two people mean everything to me, and without them and God of course I would surely be lost in this world we were destined to deal with as it came with its adversities and triumphs. My father was a man of hard, honest work and being a plumber was his way of earning a living for his family. He left home at an early age to support himself with no high school education and literacy skills. Even though he might have known that choosing this life would have been harsh and nerve-racking, he’d endured every obstacle to become his own businessman. His perseverance is what drives me to not give up on every little thing that may seem or come to be difficult to this day. I was surely a daddy’s girl and it permanently scarred me when he died, but instead of taking the negative route I chose to use his memory as something to guide me throughout my life as I mature into a young woman. My mom, another influential figure, has been through some hard times in her younger years like my father. Her education ceased at a high school degree, and instead of becoming a secretary or office worker like she had aspired, her fate took a turn into the slumps when she gotten pregnant at 18. The child had to come first before anything she wanted now, and for years ‘til she had me (her last child) she had put anything social or personal aside for her children needs. This was a lesson to me to set aside goals to do better than this and live life, but not let it live me. She always tell me her mistakes so I wouldn’t repeat it, and checks constantly on my grades, homework, and tell me to work hard and take the initiative to become the best in what I want from this life. College is one of those steps to benefit me in experience of challenging the real world and building a foundation…

I would like my future husband to have the same personality and characteristics as my father. I do firmly believe that God gave me the perfect example of the way a husband should be, so when I found him, I would immediately recognize and connect with him, or maybe more importantly, I would wait for him until I find him. Three very unique traits stick out in my mind about my father that make up his whole personality, and my husband will have to posses these. First is kindness, genuine kindness. Second is intelligence, so when both of us have left our prime, we can still make each other laugh. Third is being responsible and accepting all that comes along with being a husband and a father.…

It was autumn. It was memory. The pale moon was high overhead, casting an opalescent glow upon the stretch of land before us. It was all too inviting. So inviting, that we trusted our clumsy feet to take us to a destination unknown as they trampled the leaves beneath them. The cool stillness of the night was breathtaking; quite literally, for the air would steal the warmth of our breath in a puff of fog as we panted through the trees, who towered above us, menacingly. I was in love with them, with the fog of my breath. I was in love with the fall.…
