Henry Detamble has grown up with a genetic disorder in which he is able to time travel. The start of the novel starts with a perplexing conversation between Henry Detamble and Clare Abshire. The story starts with the narrator Susie Salmon(14). She has been dead since December 6th 1973 after she was raped and killed by her neighbour. Here’s how Susie’s story happened she was walking home from school one day and decided to take the shortcut through the corn field and sees one of her neighbours (who she recognizes but does not know) and he has built an underground den. He lures her in and she instantly knows this was the bad idea and shortly after he rapes and kills her. She’s in heaven whilst she’s telling her story and learns that she has her own personal heaven and everybody gets one once they have died. This is her story.
The lead detective on Susie’s case on December 9 discovered a bone (elbow)and calls her parents. From heaven Susie watches her parents unable to talk. Later on Susie’s school books are found including a love note from ray her one and only love. Everybody assumes it was ray and has completely wrecked his school life whilst she looks down from heaven watching her family and then her own murderer creating more dens for his next victims. On the 15th detective tells the Salmons that Susie’s probably
