In all of these myths there are obstacles that each couple must face before they can live happily ever after. Cultures around the world have such similar myths because they have the same view of love and they all believe in “happily ever after.” The similarities in myths from different cultures shows that people all over the world are fascinated with the idea of true love. These myths are all similar in the fact that in the end love prevails; however they are different because they face different obstacles in their journey.…

In the book why we love, author Helen Fisher attempts to understand the idea behind the human romantic love by studying the mating behavior of animals. Thus, she firmly believes that romantic love is a phenomenon arising from ‘human nature’. Which shows itself in the different forms in the animal kingdom. The book begins by presenting the results of a scientific study in which Fisher scanned the brains of people who had just fallen madly in love. She proves, at last, what researchers had only suspected: that when you fall in love, primordial areas of the brain "light up" with increased blood flow, creating romantic passion. Fisher uses this new research to show exactly what you experience when you fall in love, why you choose one person rather than another, and how romantic love affects your sex drive and your feelings of attachment to a partner. She argues that all animals feel romantic attraction, that love at first sight comes out of nature, and that human romance evolved for crucial reasons of survival. Lastly, she offers concrete suggestions on how to control this ancient passion, and she optimistically explores the future of romantic love in our chaotic modern world.…

The piece foregrounds and gives “textual prominence” (Huckin, 1997, p. 82). to the depiction of love through both a fabled lens and a scientific lens. The descriptive comparison of the symbolism “hearts and doves, stars and fireworks” with “functional magnetic resonance imaging” highlights how contemporary relationships are no longer a fairytale experience, or specifically “aren’t nearly as pretty.”…

There are three stories that I loved in particular during this quarter. The Things They Carried, A Roman Incident, and A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings. These three stories carried a lot of emotion and excitement. They all have different plots and backgrounds, but for the most part, there are so much in common between these three stories in a psychological, socio/political, spiritual, queer, and feminist lens. Besides those examples, the one thing that connects these three the most is that the reader can find love in all of the stories.…

There is a certain pain that is felt whenever a loved one passes. Beyond sadness, it is hurt, it is anger, it is confusion, and an almost unidentifiable emptiness where the lungs should be. People who have not experienced such loss have a happy, if hazy, view of the world. Then, there are those who lose someone… a major someone... so very special. They do eventually move on, but the pain alters them forever. Ed Sheeran, in the song “Afire Love,” illustrates how the loss of an individual can impact everyone around them, young and old.…

Committed relationships can be mysterious things, acting almost as a third entity that grows and lives around two people. As an outside observer, it can be difficult to understand what makes a relationship thrive or struggle. Due to this mysteriousness, having the opportunity to analyze the relationship of an admired couple can bring a great deal of insight. Recently, I interviewed a couple that I respect and love dearly, my older brother, John Willis, and his wife, Shau Shau Lin Willis. Whenever I question what type of relationship I want or whether a potential partner may be the right person for me, John and Shau Shau’s relationship is an important standard of comparison. This standard of comparison exists because their relationship has…

    An Astrologer's Day Essay

"An Astrologer's Day" has a deceptively simple plot, although the full significance of the story becomes evident only after a second or even third reading. Part of the difficulty arises from the fact that the author deliberately avoids markers that would benefit the reader: there is no clear indication where the story occurs or when it does, although it is possible to make an educated guess about both. The story begins almost in medias res (in the middle) and concludes on what appears to be an ambiguous note. But, in fact, the story is a tightly knit one in which all parts fit together.…
