Poe includes no blood or gore in this story. In fact, he makes the reader wait and the fact of not knowing what will happen it’s what makes this story a great horror one.

Narrator and point of view: The narrator in this story is in first person, therefore it has a central narrator. It is explained by the protagonist and describes what he sees and feels. This is used by Poe to give some emotion to the story. Also it’s important to notice that the story is told by our protagonist in a backward-looking.
Protagonists: In this story we have three different characters, the first one it’s our narrator, the protagonist. Nevertheless, we don’t know much about him, not even his name or why he is sentenced to death by the Spanish Inquisitors. The other characters are the Inquisitors, the judges. But, again, we know nothing about them except that they are cruel. Lastly we have General Lasalle, the rescuer of our protagonist. We know that General Lasalle belongs to the French army, the ones who finished with the Spanish Inquisition. In fact, General Lasalle was a real historical character.
