The Maximum Height of the bounce of a ping pong ball

Introduction
This experiment,is an investigation into the maximum height of the bounce of a ping pong ball when it is first released. This is because of the unpredictability of the bounce not always reaching the same height. This we can assume their are many factors effecting the bounce of the ping pong ball. The following experiment will determine how different surfaces on which a ping pong ball is released affects the height of the first bounce.

Research question
How does the surface on which a ping pong ball bounces affect its maximum height of first bounce, provided other factors are kept constant?

Factors which affect the height of the first bounce
The gravitational potential energy & kinetic energy of the ping pong ball.
The surface on which it bounces.
The initial height of release.
The dimensions of the surface on which it bounces.
The angle of projection.
The speed of projection.
The Temperature of the ball.
The pressure within the ball.
The Room conditions of which each surface is placed (Room temperature ,wind speed etc..)
The force at which the ball is released.
The acceleration due to gravity.
The density of the the atmosphere within that area.
The type, size, weight, mass, density and volume of the ping pong ball.

Variables
Independent variable
The Surface on which the ping pong ball bounces, material which the surface is made out of.
Dependent variable
Maximum height achieved with the first bounce.

Controlled variables
The Initial Height of release.
The gravitational potential energy & kinetic energy of the ping pong ball.
The dimensions of the surface on which it bounces.
Angle of projection.
Speed of projection.
The type, size, weight, mass, density and volume of the ping pong ball.
Temperature and pressure of the ball. The Room conditions of which each surface is placed (Room temperature ,wind speed etc..)
The force with which the ball is released.

This experiment was to use kinetics of projectile motion and free falling bodies to determine the distance a ball will travel after it hits a bounce plate. To determine this we had to use the equations x=(1/2)at2 and v=v0+at and derive an equation that will determine the distance the ball will travel based on the height of the bounce plate and the height of where the ball will be dropped above the bounce plate. The equation made was g*(sqrt(2)/sqrt(g))*(sqrt(H)*sqrt(h)). From here we can make an estimate of how far the ball will travel after it hits the bounce plate.…

If aluminum bats have a greater trampoline effect than wooden bats , then aluminum bats will hit the ball a greater distance. This hypothesis is true based on the information gathered, from the aluminum bats. The first, second, and third aluminum bats ball averages were much higher than the wooden bats ball averages. This proving the aluminum bats hit the ball a much greater distance than the wooden bats . The aluminum bat has a flex when the ball hit the bat making…

This investigation aims to explore the different paths of shots used in Beer Pong which is a drinking game that involves a ping pong ball and usually 20 cups. This topic is of significance to many teenagers and early adults as it addresses the techniques used in a game played at almost every party. I am very interested in projectile motion as it is part of the topics we cover in HL physics and this also links to a very fun game. It is also one of the topics included in engineering courses which is what I plan to study at university level therefore this gave me the opportunity to improve my knowledge in a future area topic. In HL…

You will consider two variables—drop height and bounce height—to try to determine how drop height affects bounce height. You probably understand that a higher drop height will result in a higher bounce height, but in this experiment, your objective is to find out how one affects the other. For example, is the bounce height equal to 100% of the drop height or 50% of the drop height? Does the relationship change at…

I choose this experiment because i like doing stuff( projects, experiments.) in sports. I think this is a good experiment is a really fun and it falls good in the topic. I also chose this experiment because i think it’s really easy to do by yourself and i have all the materials to conduct it. i also chose this experiment because i’m kind of like an expert in this topic because i have been in football for like 3 years so i think i know alot about the balls grip and how it affects the length. I think i will help out football players like Qb’s to know if a better grip will help it go farther.…

The second and most important component is the rubber bladder, this is made out of polyisobutylene(C4H8)n, the same material as a standard bike inner tube. Soft surfaces like the laptop case deformed as soon as the ball hit against it causing the ball to use less Elastic Potential Energy therefore reducing the bounce height whereas harder surfaces such as the classroom table and the classroom floor did not deform and resulted in the ball using more Elastic Potential Energy. Changing heights also altered the bounce rates, the higher the ball was to start off, the higher it bounced and did more total bounces. This is because the higher an object is, the higher it’s GPE and as the ball is dropped, gravity forces it downward and the velocity increases as the GPE transforms into Kinetic energy and when it impacts the floor, it bounces higher than an object with less…
