They did other things like religious rituals and developed a complex 'hieroglyphic' writing system used to keep their religious and history events on record. They say by AD 800 , Mayan civilization was in decline and had soon disappeared and the population dispersed into small villages. Although nobody understands why, archaeologists believe it had something to do with how big their population was and it caused cities to be grown so large and over populated. My own theory to this is quite different on the other hand. The Aztec empire had many accomplishments besides building cities, they used picture writing to record their religious and political history and many other brilliant things. Aside from this they were very harsh rulers to their people, one of the harsh things being sacrificing people, believing it would keep the sun alive. Aztec society was strictly hierarchical and was ruled by a " godlike " emperor. Religion was a very big and important part of the Aztecs everyday life. Since having such harsh ways of ruling it helped to undermine the empire in the end. Being the largest and most impressive city at the time being in 1519, the Spanish thought they were day dreaming when founded the city. The Spanish conquistador ended up taking the Aztec emperor of the time being, Montezuma the second hostage. Aztecs could not withstand and within a 3 year time period the Spanish were able to collapse the empire, with the help of the local Indian tribes who were eager to break away from Aztecs harsh ruling.
