The Mayflower
The Perilous Journey Aboard the Mayflower

In 1620 a group of English people who wanted to freely worship God, resolved to relocate to America. The group is now known as the Pilgrims. The boat they sailed on was called the Mayflower. During the trip a sneaky, surging storm erupted. The wildly hollering storm which would not subside for days, made the pilgrims stay below the deck. The deck quickly became over crowded, stinky, loud, and noisy with the cries of little ones. The cracks in the deck boards leaked cold, salty seawater. The pilgrims got soaked and shivered. They were also absolutely terrified.

Before long, Goodman John Howland got tired of being cramped up in the damp, stinky holding below deck. So he presumed he could climb up to the deck to get away from the stench. Though the wind was blowing very hard he liked it a lot more that being cooped up in the damp, stinky holding where it was safer. Suddenly the ship violently rolled back and forth and threw him over board. He urgently grabbed a rope. Luckily, some sailors who were walking by were astonished to see him hanging from a rope. How luck he was! So the sailors used a boat hook to save John, who was desperately hanging on the rope for his dear life. When they finally pulled John back up on board he was terrified and grateful that his life had been saved. So Goodman John Howland thanked the sailors and gratefully went back below deck. The Pilgrims were overjoyed to find that he was fine. The journey to the new world would be a long, terrifying and perilous trip.

With enough financial aid to establish a colony, the Pilgrims prepared for the move. They purchased their own ship, a small vessel known as the Speedwell and were granted another which the Virginia Company rented called the Mayflower. Losing a ship caused some of them to be sent back to Holland as there was no room. They finally set sail for the northern part of the Virginia colony with a total of 102 passengers aboard the Mayflower, September 6, 1620. The entire voyage took around two months and rough storms blew them off course. Instead of landing near present-day New York like they had originally planned, they ended…

When I read chapter three, “The Truth about the First Thanksgiving,” in the novel “Lies My Teacher Told Me,” this chapter is interesting about the Pilgrims in New England and how textbooks do not go into detail about the struggles the Pilgrims went through. Lowen wants textbooks to assist students to understand the history of the Pilgrims and how they discovered America. In this chapter, Lowen explains the history of the Pilgrims in New England, how and why they got there, and what they found. Before the Pilgrims got to America, an illness called the plague moved across southern New England. This illness was brutal and deadly, it killed a lot of the population in southern New England.…

The excerpt from William Bradford's Of Plimouth Plantation tells the story of the journey on the Mayflower and the arrival in the New World. Before the disembarkation, the settlers dealt with “the vast ocean and a sea of troubles before in their preparation.” Along with their battle with the ocean, the pilgrims experienced misfortune before, during, and after arriving in the New World. Bradford uses nature both literally and metaphorically in order to recount the trials and tribulations that the early settlers faced.…

The choice of the Jamestown peninsula; believing it would provide security from the natives, proved to be a poor one. The land “was low and swampy and surrounded by thick woods” (Brinkley 35). They became susceptible to disease such as malaria. For the Pilgrims upon the Mayflower, intending to most likely land around the Hudson River; in what is now New York, instead discovered themselves on the Cape Cod. After some exploration, they found their settlement in Plymouth a land just outside the London Company’s region. The first winter claimed the lives of half their colonist due to malnutrition, disease and…

The ship floundered, bobbing in the ragged sea like a bloated corpse. Three rows of oars slapped at the angry sea, but could not hold the waves at bay. The sea was no friend to the finless creatures on the wooden vessel, and their terror screamed louder than the wind. Another wave swelled, hammering the ship until the wood groaned. The mast splintered and fell. The wind howled.…

Day after day of bobbing around made us grow wearisome, but we tried techniques to cope with the long journey. Dancing, singing, telling stories—we did what we could to make the time pass. We kept the hope of finding land close but knew the weather took charge over where we landed and when. We used prayer as our only weapon against the roaring storms, and it always got us through; we always came out safe, but one storm, the worst storm of all, came one…

Having been condemned, by nature and fortune, to active and restless life, in two months after my return, I again left my native country, and took shipping in the Downs, on the 20th day of June, 1702, in the Adventure, Captain John Nicholas, a Cornish man, commander, bound for Surat. We had a very prosperous gale, till we arrived at the Cape of Good Hope, where we landed for fresh water; but discovering a leak, we unshipped our goods and wintered there; for the captain falling sick of an ague, we could not leave the Cape till the end of March. We then set sail, and had a good voyage till we passed the Straits of Madagascar; but having got northward of that island, and to about five degrees south latitude, the winds, which in those seas are observed to blow a constant equal gale between the north and west, from the beginning of December to the beginning of May, on the 19th of April began to blow with much greater violence, and more westerly than usual, continuing so for twenty days together: during which time, we were driven a little to the east of the Molucca Islands, and about three degrees northward of the line, as our captain found by an observation he took the 2nd of May, at which time the wind ceased, and it was a perfect calm, whereat I was not a little rejoiced. But he, being a man well experienced in the navigation of those seas, bid us all prepare against a storm, which accordingly happened the day following: for the southern wind, called the southern monsoon, began to set in.…
