The Maze Runner, by James Dashner, is a 374-page dystopian fiction book about a boy named Thomas, who arrives in a mysterious setting of a glade with a maze, where boys show up with no memories of their previous lives, just their first names. The only way out of the glade is a maze, which Thomas eventually finds the solution to, leading to the boys being able to escape. The main conflict in this novel is that the characters must figure out how to survive and solve the maze to escape the Glade. First, as discussed earlier, some people must be sacrificed along the way for breaking the rules. In addition, the Runners, who go into the Maze every day to collect information on it, must work as a team to build a map and, eventually, figure out the code that the maze is telling the boys. “FLOAT CATCH BLEED DEATH STIFF PUSH. That was it. Six words” (Dashner 290). This is the code that the Runners figure out together, which will help them later on in escaping the maze. Throughout the plot, the theme is expressed in many different situations, as the boys must work together and stick to the rules to keep order within their society and gather the information needed to solve the main conflict.
