The last paragraph of Kafka’s reading metamorphosis discreetly suggests that the family’s emotions aren’t as they read, but they will travel to the edge to find a successful prospect to lead for the future. The opening sentence reads “then the three of them altogether left the flat,” pg. 241 this section of the sentence has a deeper meaning than the Samsa’s just taking off from their home and going to the park as the sentence follows up . As I read this opening sentence the word “flat” stands out to me. Flat stands out in sentence because it is used in a very untraditional way that makes me believe it has another meaning besides the description of the flat land they are on. When defining the word flat I think of a smooth, even surface without any lumps or indentations. When defining flat in an emotional context, I would define it as a lacking of interest or emotion, perhaps dull and lifeless. The context of “flat” in this first sentence of the last paragraph I would say speaks to Gregory family’s emotions after him not being present. I envision an insect or a cockroach, I always see them crawling up a wall perhaps a flat surface. Which becomes ironic to this situation as Gregor is an insect and has struggle being mobile on the flat surface which they refer to as home. In this opening sentence flat may speak of the family's emotions not just a state of the land. This word…

His mother, wanting to accommodate her son, removes the furniture in room so he can move more freely in it. However, Gregor still has a need to have human belongings in his room. The picture of the woman in the furs, for example, has significance for Gregor because it reminded him of his former life. His sister Grete, is the only one who seems to get close to him, even though there is at least in the first two parts of the story, sympathy for Gregor from his mother and sister. Gregor’s father was unkind man who seemed primarily concerned with finances, even from the first day of Gregor’s metamorphosis, and even attacks Gregor later on in the story with fruit, injuring him.…

Elie Metchnikoff has discovered phagocytosis in a starfish. The inner space of starfish is a primitive version of human extravascular (extravasal) compartment. The first line of host defense in humans is extravascular compartment which is evolutionally older than intravascular compartment (cardiovascular and lymphatic systems) and includes external and internal covers (skin, conjunctiva, tympanum, upper and lower respiratory mucous membranes, digestive tract mucous membranes, etc.) and different organs and structures (the brain, internal and endocrine organs, muscles, red bone marrow). Some organs and tissues are in direct contact with the environment (the lungs, the skin, gastrointestinal epithelium, etc.), the others are internally located (the brain and spinal cord, the liver, the kidneys, endocrine glands, testes and ovaries) and have no direct contacts with the environment. The cardiovascular system…

    2. The fact that Gregor's situation is so casually introduced makes it seem like his transformation is an everday thing and it happened for no particular reason. Gregor wakes up and sees that he is transformed and all that he says is "What's happened to me?"(3). This creates a tone of acceptance because never in the book does Gregor raise the question of how this transformation happened, but he accepts the fact that he is now an insect. The tone effects the way how he story is read by making the reader see the world in the story has purposeless and random, rather than arranged, and than some events are just to be accepted.…

    Metamorphosis Analysis

Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis is so strikingly absurd that it has engendered countless essays dissecting every possible rational and irrational aspect of the book. One such essay is entitled "Kafka's Obscurity" by Ralph Freedman in which he delves down into the pages of The Metamorphosis and ferrets out the esoteric aspects of Kafka's writing. Freedman postulates that Gregor Samsa progresses through several transformations: a transformation of spatial relations, a transformation of time, and a transformation of self consciousness, with his conscious mutation having an antithetical effect on the family opposite to that of Gregor. His conjectures are, for the most part, fairly accurate; Gregor devolves in both his spatial awareness and his consciousness. However, Freedman also asserts that after Gregor's father throws the wounding apple, Gregor loses his sense of time. While his hypothesis certainly appears erudite and insightful, there really is no evidence within the book itself to determine whether if Gregor has a deteriorating sense of time. If Freedman had only written about Gregor's spatial and conscious degradation, then his entire thesis would be accurate.…

After Gregor's transformation, Grete initially seems to care about and feel concern for his well-being, as she would have before his metamorphosis. When she first sees Gregor, she shuts the door quickly in surprise, but she opened it again and "came in on tiptoe, as if she were visiting an invalid or even a stranger" (378). She didn't want to disturb him and acted very polite around him. She sets out different types of food for him, to see which he likes the best. She also notices his new habits of his, and helps him keep them. For instance, leaving the chair by the window when she notices that he moves it there.…

Gregor and Grete were very close as siblings. They went from having each other’s backs to imaging fantasies. After his transformation, Grete had been scared to even look at Gregor. But being the close siblings they were, Grete once again, had Gregor’s back. Their Father and Mother had promised not to step inside of Gregor’s room which left Grete in change of feeding and “taking care” of Gregor. “If Gregor had only been able to speak to his sister and thank her for everything she had to do for him, he could have accepted her services more easily; as it was, they caused him pain” (28). Kafka is showing sympathy for Grete. Gregor’s guilty scale is rising. Gregor’s father also makes Gregor feel guilty about his transformation. “One apple, thrown weakly, grazed Gregor’s back and slip off harmlessly. But the very next one that came flying after it literally forced its way into Gregor’s back” (37). Kafka was symbolizing the apple as if it was Mr.Samsa’s love for Gregor. When Gregor first transformed, Mr.Samsa was angry but didn’t take action. The second apple represented Mr.Samsa’s irritation towards Gregor. Gregor felt,” nailed to the spot and stretched out his body in a complete confusion of all his senses” (37). Kafka represented that Mr.Samsa was done with…

The Metamorphosis touches upon several of Freud’s dream theories. It presents the idea of dreams as a portrayal of wishes. Another one of Freud’s theories that is presented is the concept of condensation as the representation of an object or idea through an action or person in a dream or fantasy. In this story, the unconscious wishes of the characters are brought to light through Gregor Samsa’s transformation and visualized during the time that Gregor spends in a fantasy-like life as a cockroach. One problem with the text is that it does not clarify whether this is fantasy or reality.…

It is this need which was Gregor’s motivation for trudging on through a job which he despises. He is like a bottom-feeder for other people’s love and respect. He maintains a spark of real intimacy for his sister, which later surfaces when he hears her playing the violin to the guests. At that moment he realizes what he has been starving for as he plays out in his mind the fantasy of keeping her in his room, having her play to him, kissing her, and telling her his plans of sending her to a music school. This gaining of Grete’s love and appreciation is the reward Gregor feels he has earned through his suffering. When he hears his family’s decision that he is in no way a human being and must be gotten rid of, he realises that his hope will never be realised. He dies alone shortly after this, as if he is giving up.…

In the story the main character that goes by the name of Gregor suddenly wakes up one morning to find that he has transformed into a bug, but the fact that he is indeed a bug he feels he must go to work for his family. His whole family is very lazy and he has to get the money for them, so after Gregor changes to a bug they are all rather shocked in the beginning but slowly begin not to care about him and basically shun him from the family by locking him in his room. With this said you can see a change of the family towards Gregor just because of this change and he is no longer useful to them, this shows the families true colors by the end of the story. At one point in the story his father hurts Gregor by throwing an apple at him and it gets lodged in his back but in the story it says “No one dared to remove the apple lodged in Gregor’s flesh so it remained there as a visible reminder of his injury”, his family are so disgusted with what he has become they won’t help him even in a moment of pain just because of the way he…
