The presidential election is performed by electors who vote as the public they represent vote, otherwise they are faithless electors, a punishable crime in some states. This is where the misunderstanding of the American peoples begins, they feel they are voting directly for the president. Were this the case they have every reason to be disgruntled seeing as their vote is filtered through several layers of electors first. This statement is wholly true, however since America is a Republic without pure democracy this has no holding on the validity of the Electoral college(Posner). The Entire American government system is set up as a Republic, we elect several officials to represent us at different levels of government. These are the people that ultimately make it to the electors list, if they are big players in their political party. Therein if we elect and support the people who vote for the president how does that not represent the American people? Since the electors in most states must vote for the candidate who won the popular vote the state's residents’ votes are represented. Some further argue that there have been situations that the popular candidate did not win the electoral college, such discrepancy has only occurred four times throughout America’s forty-four elections, and these were all close races typically with a fringe candidate taking votes that would have won that candidate the popular vote(Eddins).
