An African american teenager named Michael Oher was spotted by Leigh Anne Tuohy wearing nothing but a t-shirt and shorts in the dead of winter. Without hesitation Leigh Tuohy invites him to stay in the Tuohy home for the night. What began as a kind gesture turns into something bigger as Michael becomes part of the family despite their differences. As the family helps Michael to fill his full potential on and off the field, the presence of Michael in the Tuohy’s lives leads them to some insightful self discoveries. Many caucasian people were rich while all of the african americans seemed to be on the poor side. This came about when the Tuohy family saw Michael for the first time. Michael was at a volleyball game picking up popcorn that was left behind by fans for the janitors to pick up or even when Mrs. Tuohy took Michael to see his mom. It was clear that Mrs. Tuohy was not from that area considering she was wearing business attire and the group outside the apartment area looked to be in ragged clothes. Now a days it is a combination of both caucasians and african americans who are both poor or rich. Race again was brought out at the football game. A fan in the stands made comments about how it was unfair that they had a black person on the team. The son of that fan kicked Michael in the head and was making rude comments. On top of that the referee did nothing about the kicking but gave penalty yards to the team Michael was on all for the coach defending his player. For me it showed that racism is something you are not born with but taught. Today’s society racism is targeted again more towards african americans. I think that the movie really represented this aspect as much as they possibly could. For me it just reinstated the fact that it does not matter what your race, religion, age, etc is but that everyone is human and that we should all be treated equally.
