physical and spiritual well-being of the individual. These professionals work together to create coordinated services for the clients by bringing their own knowledge of their profession to the table.
There are different multi-disciplinary teams for different agencies, systems and other facets of employment.
Each of the members bring different perspectives to the table and understanding each person’s role in the meeting can lessen the amount of confusion. In terms of social work the multi-disciplinary team consists of a physician, nurse, social worker, psychologist, client, parent/caregiver (if the client is a child), and any other staff that is working with the client. To go more in depth I will discuss three specific professionals from this team, the social worker, the psychologist and the nurse.
For the social worker it is important to remember the social work core values and ethics. The social workers role is to also assess the client through biopsychosocials and develop and intervention plan. The social worker considers all the factors that may impact the client positively and negatively. Being culturally competent and using the gathered information from the assessments, the social worker also provides support to the client and their family while providing resources for housing, shelter, food and
clothing.
The psychologist is there to provide the necessary assessments of the client to the meeting; the assessments focus on the client’s behavior and mental stability. They discuss what interventions they think will be good for the client mentally. They must suggest team supervision or other forms of consultations. The nurse discusses the necessary medications that the client is taking and any other medical concerns that they have. If the client is in the hospital the nurse is responsible for patient recovery and making sure the client is satisfied with what they are receiving.
There are multiple ways that the process benefits the client. The client receives resourceful and positive outcomes for success. They can being to understand just how important they are and that the professionals want to see them grow. The client can also hear not from just one but all the professionals that are working with them and be able to discuss how they feel about their situation. The family that is involved can also ask questions and be a part of the clients plan for change. The client has the advantage of using both service and mental health professionals. They have access to information, support and proactive care.
The multidisciplinary teams is important in any case that has more than one professional need. It is important for the client so that they can learn, receive help and support from the professionals and be able to move forward taking care of themselves.
