The Myriads: A Short Story
Loss is often sudden and painful, like a kick to the gut, but the pain eventually fades leaving you with only a memory of the past. Sometimes, though, it is not a kick. It is a rusty razor gash that opens up your belly leaving you desperately trying to stuff slippery innards back into a yawning wound. Even when it heals there remains a jagged scar and a dull ache as lingering reminders of what has been lost.

I once counted Professor Gregor Szaranev as a close friend. I suppose I still do even though Gregor has never forgiven me for that one day in Plymouth. The day OWON’s razor finally found us and cut Irina out of our lives.

Gregor, Irina and I were all baked right about the same time when there was a need for researchers. All part of the “Pentas”

Her slightest smile could lift the most downtrodden spirit and give it strength. She found joy in the simplest things and would readily share that joy with you. In all ways, she was the opposite of Gregor.

I remember about the same time that Obore Daniels started becoming popular among the Myriads, Gregor took to calling them “common stock.” The Myriads were the first large group of mnemosynes the council ordered created to fill the need for semiskilled and unskilled labor. They were cooks and farmers and custodians and the like. Irina thought the term common stock was demeaning, which it of course was. Gregor detested what he thought were mnemosynes designed for their muscles and not their brains. He's always been a bit of an intellectual elitist.

Though Gregor and Irina shared a sibling bond and would support one another even if they knew the other was wrong, they disagreed on the issue of Obore Daniels. Gregor saw Daniels as a malcontent attempting to disrupt peace and stability by agitating the Myriads. Irinia saw Daniels’ growing popularity as an affirmation that the council had begun to alienate people they considered something of a servant

He is often worried how his family would take him in his hideous state, he often wondered, would they accept him? “They were cleaning out his room, taking away from him everything he cherished; they had already dragged out the chest of drawers in which the fret saw and other tools were kept, and they were now loosening the writing desk which was fixed tight to the floor, the desk on which he, as a business student, a school student, indeed even as an elementary school student, had written out his assignments… He squatted on his picture and did not hand it over.” (Kafka 57, 58) As a result, even though he knows he would feel more physically comfortable if his room were emptied of furniture, allowing him to crawl anywhere he pleased, Gregor panics when Grete and his mother are taking out the furniture, such as the writing desk he remembers doing all his assignments at as a boy. In a desperate attempt to hold onto the few reminders he has of his humanity, he clings to the picture of the woman muffled in fur so that no one will take it away.…

On November 10th, 1898, Wilmington, North Carolina became the site of the only coup d’état in American history. The uprising of 1898 was complicated, with deep roots and lasting effects, yet this momentous event has gone largely ignored, relegated to an obscure corner of history where it is remembered only as a petty riot. It is rarely acknowledged as the incident that led to the overthrow of North Carolinian Reconstruction governments in favor of the Democratic assemblies that instituted the infamous Jim Crow laws, leading to a century of segregation. The Democrats of North Carolina staged this uprising as a reaction to the laws placed on them by Reconstruction—laws that were alien, diametrically opposed to the views held by the Old South,…

His mother, wanting to accommodate her son, removes the furniture in room so he can move more freely in it. However, Gregor still has a need to have human belongings in his room. The picture of the woman in the furs, for example, has significance for Gregor because it reminded him of his former life. His sister Grete, is the only one who seems to get close to him, even though there is at least in the first two parts of the story, sympathy for Gregor from his mother and sister. Gregor’s father was unkind man who seemed primarily concerned with finances, even from the first day of Gregor’s metamorphosis, and even attacks Gregor later on in the story with fruit, injuring him.…

It is a fact of life that every individual will experience loss and grief at some point in their lives but in certain circumstances they may be unaware of it. Loss can come in many disguises from the easily recognisable bereavement, to redundancy, children leaving home, divorce, relocation, disfigurement, chronic illness, miscarriage, loss of a close pet, abortion and others. When a client presents for Counselling, it is vital to be alert for losses, both recent and historical, to check if there are unresolved issues because grief can be easily missed or misinterpreted. Chrysalis (2012) states that there are two ways in which a therapist will encounter the need to work with loss and grief. These are:…

A continuation of the previous quote reaches key points of Gregor’s family and work relations, “I’d like to see my boss’s face if I tried that some time; he’d can me on the spot. Although who knows, maybe that would be the best thing for me. If I didn't have to hold back for my parents’ sake, I’d have given notice long ago” (4). Gregor Samsa lives to please his parents, yet he goes further than going to work on time to bring a smile on his parents’ faces. He willingly sacrifices the minimal joy of his own life in order to bring a bit of sublimity to his family. While it may seem out of pure empathy and love, a larger force designates Gregor signed a pact making him the indentured servant of his family, he serves the same function as any of the other maids or cleaning ladies whom the Samsas swap often. He’s worth hardly anything, similarly to the women who come by the house submitting to the Samsa family to acquire cash going home. Gregor works hours at a time at a job sucking the humanity out of him, literally transforming him into a creature so unrecognizable to society as a living being worth respect. Gregor suffers repeatedly, taking figurative slashes and whips from someone he performs labor for. His value is even lesser to his general manager, who lacks the decency to learn a simple fact or give human qualities to the object working for him, “‘Herr Samsa,’ the general manager now called out” (10). The manager lacks beyond just polite mannerism, he literally objectifies Gregor over and over yelling commands and sticking an identity as the property of the business. Yet, Gregor never opposites such treatment signifying his custom to treatment less than humane. Gregor Samsa is a victim and indentured servant of corporate exploitment and his family’s fiscal…

They started, “Giving thanks to God”(pg. 58). During the first parts of the book, outside consisted of cold weather, but now, “The fresh air was partly tinged with warmth”(pg. 59). That surely gave some life to the story towards the end. In the beginning of the story, the father came off as lazy and timid, but now how was active and confident. “Then all three left the apartment together, something they had not done for months now”(pg. 61). All of this shows that the family merged together in the end, and Gregor was actually the person holding them back from becoming closer and progressing in…

The story is mainly revolves with Gregor Samsa, who found himself transformed into his bed into a horrible vermin. This made Grete, his sister, to help him out by giving him food every day. She had served him twice a day. But, eventually, she has grown impatient with the task. One day, when Gregor emerges from his room, his father chases him around the dining room table and pelts him with apples. One of the apples got lodged in his back, causing an infection. Because of his infection and his hunger, Gregor is soon barely able to move at all. "The fusillade of fruit is an uncontrollable, instinctive reaction to the presence of his transformed son. The father is no thinker, no philosopher, and no great spirit either. He does not understand the unrecognizable son and cannot really hope to. His assault of apples is a pathetic rage of incomprehension, almost pitiable--but nonetheless lethal, easily penetrating the son 's armor. Remorse follows, no doubt, for there are no more attacks, but the damage has been done." (Sparknotes, 2005) Then, here came the three lodgers that they had accepted to earn extra income for the family. One night, when Grete was practicing playing her violin, the lodgers wished for a performance. This also lured and enticed Gregor so he made his way downstairs, but one of the lodgers sees Gregor, and all three declare that they will leave the next day.…
