Gregor has always been an introvert, it seems that this was going on even before the beginning of the novella. Gregor’s profession has him traveling day in, day out; furthermore, he has “bad and irregular meals”, and,”a steady stream of faces that never seem to be anything closer than acquaintances.” (Kafka 7-8) Having tons of people be nothing more than a person you just wave to and walk away makes some people feel isolated from the world. For Gregor to have to feel that he is not special enough, him just being the boss’s minion, to have the head clerk come to check on him is just another proof that Gregor has always been a loner, or just a person who ranks himself lower than anyone else. Gregor, even before his metamorphosis, has been a wallflower.

Once Gregor’s mother finds out about his transformation, she faints due to most likely shock and disgust. Due to Gregor’s new state his own mother disowns him, and there is no telling how society will act. The head clerk comes to criticize Gregor, and all the clerk has to say when the door is opened is,” Oh,”(Kafka 16) and use his hands to cover his mouth. The clerk must be so appalled by what he’s looking at, he knows Gregor but is not a close friend, this could be symbolic of how society might act towards Gregor. Gregor’s family, and society, also disown him and aggravate his
