The character of Matilda Loisel
The young, beautiful and charming Matilda Loisel was born into a family of clerks. Her conviction that her place in life was a mistake of destiny leads her to live her life in constant rebellion against her circumstances. Madame Loisel had everything a woman of her social class was supposed to have like a loving husband and a comfortable home but she is unaware of it because all she worried about was being a part of the elite.
Her desire to be wealth made her a very unhappy person. It caused constant pain in her life. Being wealthy bothered her so much that when she visited her rich friend she would return and cry for days and suffered so much of depression, regret and annoyance.
Even though Madame Loisel had all the things that could make one happy she still wasn’t and this turned her life into a very unpleasant one.
The message of the story
The message in the story is that you should be grateful for what you have and that it is better to tell the truth and face the consequences that the truth will bring than to try and protect ones pride by telling a lies.
If Madame Loisel had to be grateful for what she had in life and not wanting a life she could never have or at least not in that time period she could have saved her from 10 long years of struggle and mostly from losing everything.
If she had told the truth and stuck her pride in her pocket she could have still had a comfortable home, a maid and husband that didn’t have to work more than one job. It could have saved her from aging tremendously.
The climax
The climax of the story is when Madame Loisel loses Madame Forestier’s fake diamond necklace and replaces it with a real one.
